Enigma hero Alan Turing “should be pardoned for historic gay conviction”, says Stephen Hawking

A man credited with saving thousands of lives during World War Two should be posthumously pardoned for his historic conviction, Professor Stephen Hawking has said.

Codebreaker Alan Turing was convicted of gross indecency in 1952 following his relationship with another man, and killed himself two years later.

Hawking is among a group of scientists who have written to the Daily Telegraph asking for the conviction to be overturned for Turing, who is considered to be the father of the modern computer and key in cracking the enigma code. …

The letter comes after Lord Sharkey, a Liberal Democrat peer and one of the signatories, introduced a private member’s bill in the Lords to grant Turing an official pardon in July. Gordon Brown issued a posthumous apology to Turing in 2009, describing his treatment as “appalling”, but stopped short of granting an official pardon. …

I recall studying the “Turing machine” in school - regardless, his conviction should stand ...

I believe that it wasn’t a homosexual liaison that wrecked Turing. It was allegations that he was molesting boys (in a library, I believe).

Well, I have never believed in "Legalized Gay Marriage" because I can't for the life of me figure out how marriage is the government's business. Marriage is God's business, and a man and a woman's business, if you ask me.

There are some homosexuals who want to be "married," and I can't really figure out how it's my business to tell them they shouldn't, but as long as we live in a world in which it's my government's business to track, tax, and control everyone in every which way, I am forced to stand up against "Gay Marriage."

At the same time, Alan Turing has been one of my heroes for a VERY long time. I wouldn't be so happy in a world deprived of Turings, or Cole Porters, or even Truman Capotes, Eltons, or Freddie Mercurys for that matter. Like it or not, the world is filled with homosexuals. It is not my business, in my opinion, whether they were born that way, or whether they became that way.

I do know this. I do not, in my heart, believe it is our govenment's business to tell consenting adults what they should and should not do in the boudoir. Maybe that makes me less of a conservative, and maybe it makes me an irresponsible citizen, but it's just what I believe. And that means Turing should not have been convicted.

Wikipedia notes:

In January 1952, Turing met 19-year-old working-class Arnold Murray outside a cinema in Manchester.[80] After a lunch date, Turing invited Murray to spend the weekend with him at his house, an invitation which Murray accepted although he did not show up. The pair met again in Manchester the following Monday, when Murray agreed to accompany Turing to the latter’s house. A few weeks later Murray visited Turing’s house again, and apparently spent the night there.[81]

After Murray helped an accomplice to break into Turing’s house, Turing reported the crime to the police and during the investigation acknowledged a sexual relationship with Murray. Homosexual acts were illegal in the United Kingdom at that time,[82] and both were charged with gross indecency under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885.[83] Turing was given a choice between imprisonment or probation conditional on his agreement to undergo hormonal treatment designed to reduce libido. He accepted the option of treatment via injections of stilboestrol, a synthetic oestrogen; this treatment was continued for the course of one year. The treatment rendered Turing impotent and caused gynecomastia.[84]

Turing’s conviction led to the removal of his security clearance, and barred him from continuing with his cryptographic consultancy for the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the British signals intelligence agency that had evolved from GCCS in 1946. At the time, there was acute public anxiety about homosexual entrapment of spies by Soviet agents,[85] due to the recent exposure of the first two members of the Cambridge Five, Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, as KGB double agents. Turing was never accused of espionage but, in common with all who had worked at Bletchley Park, was prevented from discussing his war work by the Official Secrets Act.[86]

Conviction stands. Any shred of respect for Hawking completely gone now as well as for anyone else who tries to support that lifestyle. Superintelligence is not an excuse to sin. The basic premise supported by people like Hawking is man making himself god above the one and only God and having the right to decide his/her behavior independent of God’s commands.

I understand what he was convicted of. As I said, it was alleged (and continues to be alleged) that he was molesting boys. Up until I read that (and it may be false), I was sorry for Turing. I was a fan of the play “Breaking the Code,” which presents his side of the story.

Some people want to condemn Christopher Columbus for the "genocide" of native Americans.
Some people want to exonerate Turing for his conviction on homosexual acts.

The past is the past. The people who want judge the past, or change the past, are the people who want to convince us all that up is down and down is up.

Let it be.

Hawking is not so super intelligent.

In 2004, Hawking announced that he was conceding the bet

Hawking loses $100 bet on Higgs discovery

He does seem to be a sick pervert though:

Professor Hawking dropped in at the Freedom Acres club in Devore, where he is said to have arrived with an entourage of nurses and assistants before paying for young, naked dancers to perform privately for him.

If his only crime was a private consensual sexual encounter with another man, why not pardon him. Such a relationship is legal now. I don’t have any idea what the actual charge was or how he was caught, so maybe there was a public aspect to it.

And that is the real problem, if true. Maybe he pled guilty to one thing, to avoid getting publicly humiliated about a far worse crime.

Obviously, the authorities on “sick perverts” are a lot more intelligent. So what immortal wisdom or innovation did *you* contribute? Something on black a-holes?

Now, what a person does with his private parts is his private business, as long as he/she/it doesn’t make it mine. “Gay” marriage is a matter of social costs, and should have nothing to do with the legal framework at all.

You are the one who would be the expert on “black a-holes” considering you are promoting the homosexual agenda on FR while getting insulting and emotional about it too.

Do have something other than your sick fascination with “black a-holes” to discuss?

Jim, here is another Troll comparing Conservative family values to Muslim sharia law, to advance the homosexual agenda on FR.

Your ravings have nothing to do with conservative family values. Hawking has a three-digit IQ, yours is probably well down in the two-digits. Sorry.

I’ll put my Conservative family values against your sick fascination with “black a-holes” any day, Einstein.
