Beer aficionados are pouncing at the rare opportunity to buy one of the world's most elusive and revered beers for the first - and perhaps only - time in the United States. It is called Westvleteren XII, and it is often hailed as the "world's best beer" by reviewers and fans. Westvleteren XII is produced by Trappist monks in Belgium and sold at the abbey of Saint Sixtus in the Belgian countryside. The beer can usually only be purchased by reservation at the abbey - and reservations are extremely hard to come by. But when the abbey found itself hurting for money for an expensive renovation, the monks reluctantly made the decision to sell the beer outside of the walls of the monastery on a one-time-only basis. "I think it will be the last [time]," Westvleteren Brewery spokesman Mark Bode told NPR. "They say, 'We are monks, we don't want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that's it,' Back to normal again." Beginning today, limited quantities of the beer are being sold in the U.S. and abroad. A number of stores have been sent "bricks" of the beer, which include six bottles and two glasses from the monastery. The gift box retails for $84.99...

I also really like Schneiders Weisse. They have a good one called Edel-Weisse as well.
I didn’t see your post #16. It may be that it’s not imported now; I haven’t lived in SC since 1998. Call Green’s Beverages in Columbia, SC, at (803) 799-9499 and ask them; that’s where I used to buy it by the case.
It would be a tragedy if it’s not available any more.
I was at Jungle Jim’s last Friday. The beverage manager there (who had the Westvleteren sitting in his storage room, but couldn’t release it until today, as per contractual agreement) told me that it was a four-pack. The picture shown above may not represent what was shipped here.
He asked me if I wanted him to set some aside for me. I told him that for $85, I’d rather have a good Burgundy.
This thread’s bringing on a powerful thirst. Too bad it’s only 2pm here.
Sorry....
I don’t care if I just won the lottery and the beer is brewed with gold dust; I’m NOT paying $85 for a sixpack!!!
Everything Pinkus Muller makes is outstanding...give it a try if you haven't already.
Oh, come on. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere (and 10PM in Spain, so I just poured a glass of Tempranillo...)
Worth every penny.
Beer ping.
Sold out in Charleston already - triple dang.
Oh, yeah . . . right . . . whatever. “Best” according to what expert?
Pinging the Home brewers!
I know I should be impressed but I look at the 85 dollar price and all I can think of is that I could make 40 gallons for that kind of money.
Am I cheap? Oh you betcha !
Cheers,

You’re sure there are still Trappists in Belgium?
Beats the pants off Trappist brews.
Maisel Weisse? Ugh! You must be kidding! That's a small step above Brauhaus, which was terrible. Falk Weizen, WeihenStephaner, Winkler, or Bruckmuller were a lot better.
BTW- The HEB grocer in San Antonio sells Maisel's from time to time.
Trappist ales are a different kind of brew altogether; in a class by themselves.
Yep! $85 dollars could buy a novice homebrewer a begining set up to brew % gallons of tasty homebrew and do it over and over!
You are never going to homebrew anything near as good as the Trappist Monks.
