I like the show, but you know in the back of your mind that they stage some portions of the show.
I think Hester was probably good for ratings, but I did not like the fact that he stated he would never deal with any guns whatsoever, I presume this means collectables as well.
Early in the series he mentioned that he had been arrested for something and done community service at the Salvation Army store or Goodwill. Doesn’t sound like a felony but he may not be able to possess guns.

Maybe with good reason. Maybe he has some sort of record? The guy who took his place was busted because he had a record, and was still on probation. Cops pulled him over when he had a truckload of stuff from some lockers. They found a gun in amongst all the junk. He ended up doing 45 days.
