Last week on the website Emergency Management, there appeared a blog post written by an emergency manager named Valerie Lucus-McEwen in which she made a grave error in judgment. She called doomsday preppers “socially selfish.”
She based this startling conclusion on the National Geographic’s “The Doomsday Prepper” series and concluded that because the people featured in this show were spending their OWN time and their OWN money to stockpile their OWN resources in order to prepare their OWN families for whatever disastrous scenario they foresaw, they are selfish. Specifically, as another emergency manager phrased it, this is “a level of indulgence that is selfish and counter-productive to providing for the common good.”

I, along with many in the prepping community, found this attitude disturbing to the point of creepy. It was exacerbated by the follow-up comments as she replied to reader questions. “It really doesn’t matter how much food you have or what you buy with your money,” she writes in a comment. “The tipping point is how you use it. … Is it something you are planning to hoard or are you working in your community to make sure everyone else is prepared also. I’m not sure how else to say it.”

My charity now is personal, and given directly to those I have deemed deserving of same. ZERO general charity, and especially none to groups with “overhead”. . . .
She must have been the loony toon who confronted Mr. b. The other day, Mr. b came back from making a quick breakfast run and was all up in arms about a crazy woman who cussed him and got in his face because he had the last half and half. Said she got really ugly to the point of wanting his cell to holler at me and tried grabbing it out of his basket. People are getting scary these days. That behavior used to never happen here. Society is changing and not for the better. There's too many warning signs and red flags.
Why “YES”, all income you make, above the poverty level, you should pay in taxes, so that the government can provide for everybody, all of the time.
....well,......except for those times when the government is the problem....

I had some email friends who lived in Florida. He was former Green Beret and went with a supply truck to deliver emergency goods to people after Andrew Hurricane.
The people rushed the truck, fights started, and it got so dangerous, he got back in the truck and they left. He said he would never do that again.
If a large crowd of thirsty/starving people rush your house because they know you gave away some water/food, you would be over run. I’m locking my front door and have fast way to close out light shining from my house, and I’m not going to the door. I’m just an old lady who lives in that house and she couldn’t have anything anyone wants.
I have watched some of the “Prepper” series on my sat TV, and find it interesting, but I fail to see the logic in much of it, when you do not know what you are prepping for.
Most of them seem to be spending their entire lives doing nothing but prepping.
Many of the preppers in these programs live in places that I would never be to begin with.
The “disaster” could be something entirely different then what you are prepared for.
For me, prepping consist of getting the hell out of Dodge, which I have already done.
While I live in a third world country, I have all the food, water, and shelter I could ever need, and at my fingertips.
There is just no way for me, or anyone, to prepare for every act of God, crime, or war.

That’s really bad - over half and half. Now, if she was actually thirsty or hungry, what would she have done? We will have to stay out of stores when it gets bad. That’s bug in/hunker down time.
I’m going to inform all of the “overhead” charities exactly why we’ll not be able to donate to them...due to the election *results* and the looming impact. I may suggest they seek support from 0, should they so desire.
charity isn’t arming your enemy, it’s suicidal.
Reminds me of the holier than thou types that are always going on about “giving back”. I appreciate those that have been good to me and try to be same back to them. But IMO, if you want to help society you be responsible for yourself and don’t demand that society provide for you. Be self sufficient, that’s giving to society.
But other than common decency and humanity, I don’t “owe” anything to people that have never done anything for me, although I try to help good people when I can, particularly those who are having trouble through no fault of their own. But I sure as hell don’t owe anything to people that refuse to be responsible, or expect others to take care of them.
I have talked for years, until I am hoarse, trying to get my BIL to consider that he should have more than a 7 day supply of food in his house, and perhaps a basic firearm for defending his home in the event of a disaster. Talk about pissing into the wind. He and his wife voted twice for Obama, they don’t give a damn what Obama’s government steals from my family and they think I am a tin foil hat loon for having done any sort of preparations beyond the nothing they have done. I told my wife that if the SHTF he and his socialist NEA wife are on their own. She agrees. Ditto for another in law that has done nothing but whine and collect money from her parents and the government for decades.
Valerie Lucus-McEwen is nothing more than a communist that is laying the groundwork for her people to go around and confiscate the emergency preparations that some of us have sacrificed to save. Make no mistake about that. In a disaster or economic collapse, you will have to protect your stuff from the government as well as the unprepared.
Makes you think, huh. People only understand entitlements and it's all about MEEEEE!

Can’t agree with this comment at all.This economy has too many people scraping to stay afloat. It has nothing to do with stupidity in many cases.
Makes one think when they see forums about prepping, makes a sure and definite reason to just lurk.
I won’t discuss my personal prepping anymore period.

I’m with you! I decided to do the same thing for the same reason and you know what i discovered? That I actually gave more than i thought! Now that i am consiously not giving I realize how much i did give! During the christmas season i walk into a dozen stores with santa bell ringers outside and usually gave to everyone. this year i walk by. the coffee tins at the all stores for locals who need donations...etc...etc...its hard!

Those are not exclusive. The definition of selfish: concerned primarily with one's own interests, benefits, welfare, etc., regardless of others.
Selfish isn't bad, unless you think the primary interest of an individual should be the interests and welfare of others. I don't.
Good luck with that. Preppers are armed to the teeth and will defend their property, families, and food from the dumb asses like you and your ilk. Come and get them if you have the stones. If not, die with the rest of the parasite scum.

We can’t really get too worked up about every *sshole in the nation, or we’ll need a dump truck full of tranquilizers on a regular basis.
Yep, more FSA BS. No, you may not have what I have labored over and prepared over the years. You should have done the same. You didn’t.
My family comes first. No offense but if you didn’t prepare, it’s not my problem. If you try to make it my problem, you won’t have to worry about any problems for very long.
My advice is to start preparing and stop thinking that you can have what I have worked for. In this ant hill, we’ll carve you grasshoppers up and spit you out.
Hear Hear!!! I feel the same way and they say “charity begins at home” and that is where my money goes now. The packrat35 fund supports my family and I.
The jagoffs who voted to raise my taxes can fend for themselves.
