Rumor has it that I’ve been removed from the House Committee on the Budget. Remarkably, I still have not received a single call, e-mail, or text from Republican leadership confirming this story. In fact, I wouldn’t even have learned about it if not for the news reports. I look forward to hearing from my party’s leadership about why my principled, conservative voting record offends them. That’s sur e to be a lively and entertaining conversation.

In the meantime, I can only speculate as to what specifically would make Republican leadership punish several of its party’s most principled members. Rep. Tim Huelskamp, who was kicked off of both Budget and the Committee on Agriculture, voted with me against the 2013 House budget resolution because it does not sufficiently address the federal government’s debt crisis. That was one of only three times during this Congress that I voted against the Chairman’s recommendations in committee. In fact, I voted with the Republican Chairman more than 95% of the time, and I have voted with my party’s leadership more than three-quarters of the time on the House floor.

What message does leadership’s heavy-handedness send? It says that independent thinking won’t be tolerated, not even 5% of the time. It says that voting your conscience won’t be respected. It says that fulfilling your commitment to your constituents to work with both Republicans and Democrats to reduce our debt takes a back seat to the desires of corporate special interests. And, most troubling for our party, it says to the growing number of young believers in liberty that their views are not welcome here.

I’ll miss working with my colleagues on Budget. I don’t relish this situation, but if one thing is clear based on the response from the grassroots, it’s that leadership’s actions will backfire. If they think kicking me off of a committee will lead me to abandon my principles or stifle my bipartisan work toward a balanced budget, I have a message for them: You’re dead wrong.

"Corporate special interests"?

"My bipartisan work"?

I'll need to learn more about this guy before I get on the bandwagon.

I know absolutely nothing about the gentleman.
But he would be prudent, at least, to wait for word from his party leadership before going on the attack in public.
There are often erroneous or mistaken news reports.......

You’re right.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just another victim of Cry-Baby Boner’s vindictiveness against Tea Party types.

From what I understand, this man did NOT vote to deny funding to Planned Parenthood.

Also, he endorsed Ron Paul.

I also will refrain from jumping on said bandwagon.

yes, you could easily be right

(from what today’s news reports seem to indicate about Mr. Boehner.... is the man just nuts, or maybe he doesn’t have any, or is he bought off, or what in the world is going on up there? He and his colleagues were elected to CUT taxes, CUT wasteful and corrupt spending, reduce burdensome over-regulation, and restore some simple sanity in WashingtonDC. Didn’t anybody give him a copy of the playbook, or????)

From above:

"my bipartisan work toward a balanced budget"

Not sure what that has to do with NDAA.

And yes, I know that NDAA has a budget aspect to it.

But the Paul partisans are focused on NDAA for other reasons.

My reply to your quote of '"My bipartisan work"?' was assuming you questioned his 'bipartisan' work in general, not merely the budget issue.

I merely brought up that one of his joint efforts was dealing with the whole NDAA powers for the Gov't.

Looks like this guy's account is contested by others.

My impression is he's just out to make headlines. As he is someone who endorsed Ron Paul somehow I'm not surprised.

I like and respect my party leaders; they’ve got a very difficult job. But sadly, it seems that the Washington GOP establishment hasn’t learned many lessons
from our Republican losses in November.

I wasn’t elected to vote in lockstep with party leaders, particularly when they support things that are bad for the country, like the Wall Street bailouts. Similarly I have proposed spending cuts - like eliminating foreign aid and the federal Department of Education; halting the bailouts of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; cutting off funding for Obamacare; and stopping the war in Afghanistan – which they have been unwilling to make.

Republican voters overwhelmingly supported my positions in my primary re-election. In the general election I was honored to receive the highest percentage of any Republican running for congress in the state of North Carolina. Nationally, the verdict on our party’s tactics was less kind.

While some in Washington think that putting constituents and common sense conservative principles first is cause for retribution, I was elected to be an independent conservative voice for Eastern North Carolina, and that’s what I’ll continue to be.

Yeah, from what I have been able to read, he is strongly opposed to domestic detention language in the NDAA.
