We just lost our 11.5 year old female Black Standard Poodle to complications from gastric torsion surgery: pneumonia and cardiac arrest. This was our second standard and are committed to the breed. We would like to replace her but there are having trouble finding litters here in VA or in the neighboring states of MD, WV or NC.
We would appreciate it if anyone knows of a breeder or a home breeder within 300-400 miles of Richmond, VA. We are not interested in showing and would prefer a black female puppy that would probably top out around 65-70 lbs which is larger than customary. If necessary, we would be willing to pay to have her shipped so this could extend the distance for the right fit.
Thank you.
They are breeding one of their red girls to a Black conformation champion with agility titles and expect pups in February, ready to go in April. Pups should be all black since black is dominant. Parents already have all their health clearances and they give a two year health guarantee.
We're 10 hours from Richmond (we drive it all the time since hubby's mom lives in Henrico), but these are REALLY nice dogs. I have trained and competed alongside them for years, and I can highly recommend them as ethical breeders and trainers. Rich has the patience of a saint!
Their website is here: Louter Creek Hunting Poodles.
I’m much too far away to help, but your loss saddens me. You might try to hunt for a poodle rescue group in the area.

So sorry for your loss! I still miss my Briard, Pandemonium. I’m 6’2” tall, and Pandy would stand up, put his front paws on my shoulders, and look me straight in the eye. Scared the cr@p outa some guys that wanted to rob my old farmhouse. I like Poodles that aren’t given the “standard” haircut.
We got a very nice healthy and well cared for standard poodle from this place:
http://www.familyaffairstandards.com/
It is just northeast of Raleigh. I was somewhat doubtful until I visited the place. They do a good job and have a good selection.
We bought a red standard there. He has been great.
Visit the place. Notice how clean it is. My wife wanted a red standard. They had several and she walked out with the biggest, wiggliest one. He just turned 10 months old.
When we got him we had a 6 year old spaded Weimaraner bitch. I was somewhat skeptical about how she was going to receive this new pup. She loves him even though he aggravates her to no end. My theory is that she wanted to be a mama and now she has a surrogate kid.
Anyway, these folks are worth a look. I know nothing about the other places recommended here so they may be just as good.
LOL. I hadn't considered that but it's a good suggestion! Back when Bush was elected in 2000, people suggested that I get a new name, but I declined, saying that I was still afraidfortherepublic. Turns out I was right. I write on another website as keeptherepublic, but that is not working too well eithr!
I understand that you have to breed a black poodle back into the red poodle line about every 3rd generation so that the reds hold their color. Just a bit of trivia.
Sorry for your loss. About a month ago we lost our 6 YO Belgian Tervuren (Larsen) to the same thing. We are picking up a Tri-Colored Rough Coat Collie male puppy next weekend. Hope you have success in your search.
I went to the website & loved watching the video of 12 wk old little female, 'Whiskey' training to retrieve. sooooo cute & smart as a whip!!
I’m sorry to hear about your loss. You might want to check into prophylactic gastropexy, which can be done at the time your pup is spayed/neutered. It is not 100% effective in preventing gastric dilatation/volvulus, but pretty close. More and more military working dogs are getting prophylactic gastropexies to save the government money overall -— or at least that was the case before I retired. Any deep chested breed is at risk, and I lost a Borzoi of my own to GDV.
Good luck with your new puppy!!!
Yep got banned from FR back then, was not a “Bushbot” my how times have not changed..Gotta go batten down the hatches got a big storm kicking in here in CA ..
Stay safe and keep the powder dry..
Check poodle rescue. Florida Poodle Rescue has had quite a few puppies lately. So sorry for your loss. I know only too well the profound sorrow.
Whiskey is much older now - she will be the dam of the upcoming litter. She IS a very personable and clever little girl.
So far so good. Causes of bloat are so poorly understood.
Their big male, Cooper, is the only Poodle with the top retriever titles in all three associations - AKC (Master Hunter), HRC (Hunting Retriever Champion) and NAHRA (Master Hunting Retriever). He hunts in Arkansas and Mississippi too.
