By 1942 Louis Armstrong was a legend. Are you thinking he played the role of Sam? That was Dooley Wilson.

I saw it the first time in 1976. I worked at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe that year. Another casino at Stateline, Del Webb’s Sahara Tahoe, showed some classic films, including ‘Casablanca,’ in their main showroom on some week nights during the summer. It was a great venue for watching that movie. Strange to think the movie was only 34 years old then while my first viewing of it was 36 years ago.

Casablanca is my all time fave movie. I think the dramatic tension works so well for a couple of reasons. The script was being written as the movie was being shot, so the actors didn’t know what was going to happen or what guy she was going to end up with. Plus, in 1942, no one knew who was going to win the war, so the Germans were much more menacing.
