Carroll, who became a custodian at Public School 87 on the upper West Side in the 1980s, was known in the music world for more than five decades as one of the lead singers of the Cadillacs.
Earl "Speedo" Carroll, one of the most colorful and beloved singers of New York-style vocal harmony in the 1950s, died Sunday at a city nursing home. He was 75.

RIP Speedo. A really great entertainer. Could never forget you and the Cadillac’s at the old Allan Freed shows.
My wife was singing in the Phoenix area in the mid 80s, when we lived there for 2 1/2 years. I met one of these guys she sat in with at a club there. He was with the Penguins and co-wrote the beautiful tune “Earth Angel”. We had a nice conversation and without me asking him, he said “I do this, and I ALSO MOW LAWNS!!!” as if he couldn’t believe it himself.
RIP.
that is really an amazing song, one that I have always loved. it’s so strange!
