This new video shows exactly how the Moon will look to us on Earth during the entire year of 2013. While the Moon always keeps the same face to us, it’s not exactly the same face. Because of the tilt in its axis and shape of its orbit, we see the Moon from slightly different angles over the course of a month, and the year. Normally, we don’t see how the Moon “wobbles” in its orbit or as it moves closer and farther away from Earth. But seeing the entire year compressed down to 5 minutes, we can see the changes in libration, and axis tilt — as well as the most noticeable changes, the Moon’s phases.

Watching the video made me wonder--is the first quarter moon brighter than the third quarter moon? It looks like a larger share of sunlit portion of the moon is dark gray maria at third quarter than at first.

It’s called Internet on the Go, it’s from Walmart. The machine is a wireless hotspot, has a cell-style battery (making it portable) and a wall charger (making it 24-7). Minutes can be had online, or from Walmart, and the initial purchase gets ya another $25 bonus or 3GB (so, I spent $10, got 4GB for 30 days).
Unlimited time (IOW, time that doesn’t expire until its used) is twice the money, or rather, the same money gets one half the GB’s, but for casual use (cottage?) it works, and the purchase stays good if one uses it at least once a year.
It’s looking cheaper than the wired options where I live now, and WAY cheaper than the other wireless options. Speed’s okay. Pages fall out once in a while, but they were definitely doing that on the dialup. After I got it working a couple hours ago, I started d/ling browser updates and such, burning off a lot of bandwidth I’m sure, to the tune of, 243MB (and counting), that’s a lot of d/ling.
Had to switch to Mac OS X and to different hardware, and I would have switched years ago, but I really, really hate this interface and the in-your-face Windulls-like Easter-egg functions — IOW, the effin’ OS is constantly popping up with things as if it can read minds. It can’t.
This is a CPU I didn’t pay for, and the keyboard, well, it just sucks. Got to switch that out. Hmm, I’ll try that goofy big yellow one I got at Bed Bath & Beyond not long ago...

Oh yeah, I’m practically running the planet from here. ;’)
I’m examining some prospects like getting a Mac mini, probably the base model, to replace this PPC behemoth, which btw makes almost no sound at all. Kinda creepy. :’) The Mac mini with OS X Server is more money, and is tempting because I’d like to run my own cloud from here, but I have other ways of doing that anyway.
Consolidation of all these machines and capabilities is going to take time now that I’ve got broadband settled. Tonight I’d like to get the rest of the electronics settled in — they have built-in wireless, and I can’t figure out how to make them hook up. Probably needed to get my initial setup taken care of, get the hotspot registered (once i got a steady signal, it wouldn’t let me do anything else, and I got stymied a couple of times, leading to lots of blue air and pledges to take everything new back for refund and become a monk).

Back on topic, the Moon’s apogee-perigee is about a 5% variance, iow, it’s about 13,000 miles different.

I thought this would be easy to track down, the search engine was somewhat niggardly. LiM has linked a cool GIF movie someone made of the Moon going through its full gyration. Couldn’t find it.

I have reviewed the North East quakes over the past months and now with yesterdays at the mouth of the St.Lawrence I think it’s safe to say something bigger than a 6 is going to occur up there with the next few months...
Amazing stuff really. There is buckling going on at various depths. The large quakes that did occur both on land and off shore have not had any aftershocks either.
Something to keep an eye on for sure....!

Was tinkering with a Net10 android. No luck turning it into hotspot yet. They've got a great pay as you go plan at $45 a month for unlimited everything over 3G. Most coverage too.
Thanks! It will probably affect the Madrid as well. It’s just a matter of time, IMO. Those CO2 spikes found occurring around ice ages in Antarctic ice core samples are there for a reason…
but the look into the history of New England quakes has been fascinating. Not much but anecdotal evidence up there but they have had periods of extreme quaking. One theory is there was a huge quake at one time and what is now realized are still aftershocks from that large quake but I think that would be a stretch.
Who knows but I do know after reviewing the video from that maine quake that it was not a normal shake but a sharp jolt....then nothing. Just odd really.

I finished cleaning up the last of the debris from Isaac only a few weeks ago. It took the cable company forever to raise their lines back into place so I could remove the tree that brought them down.
