I am looking for an AK47. The Russian AK’s are gone or the price is beyond my budget. What is in-line as the next in quality AK, by country of manufacture?

Romanian SAR1 or SAR2 are the best quality stamped receiver AKs, IMO. Stay away from Chinese (Norinco)

The VEPR’s are the highest quality Russian made AKs but the magazines are expensive ad proprietary

You can save some money, doing what news reporters do.

Buy a bb gun or a pellet gun.

Call it an AK 47.

You’re all set.

Also 5.45x39 ammo is the cheapest ammo on the market currently.

Look into the Bulgarian made Arsenal SLR-101S stamped or milled if you can afford it. One of the best there is.

note: 5.45x39 makes it an AK74

I agree. Bulgies are high quality.
Yugos and Polish are nice too

I am seeing a lot of Russian models available at Gun Broker. Just have it shipped to your FFL.

I saw a lot still available at the gun show here last weekend.

A Yugo SKS from Fleet Farm is about $300, I think.

I have a Yugo in .223, and it is by far the best AK I have ever owned. Even lucked into a case of 20 magazines for it (slightly modified AK74 mags) a few years back. I got it for under $400 10 years ago, but they still pop up sometimes in the $500-$600 range. Mags are a bit hard to find now though

I figgered ‘em at about $250. That’s including the cost of the homemade press.

I have a Romanian. Very good sturdy rifle. Kinda shaky with my thirty rounder in it. But hey if it shoots straight and hits its target not to bad. Love it.
