The 'mistake' was made by a sixth century monk known as Dionysius Exiguus or in English Dennis the Small, the 85-year-old pontiff claims in the book 'Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives', published on Wednesday.
"The calculation of the beginning of our calendar – based on the birth of Jesus – was made by Dionysius Exiguus, who made a mistake in his calculations by several years," the Pope writes in the book, which went on sale around the world with an initial print run of a million copies.

Correct. The name “Palestine” was given to the region by Emperor Hadrian, apparently to insult the Jews.
If you look at history and the records and do the math, then it comes out to 2 or 3 BC late September.
Does this mean that the Mayan calendar is wrong, and that the TEOTWAWKI was really November 6, 2012??
Perhaps we can make it 2008 again so we can try again to nominate a better candidate against Obama. :(
What would be better, would be to follow God's calendar. The important dates, among many others, are his birth and Crucifixion. These dates that are important because we were given them ahead of time in that we may know that God exists.
Not knowing the times, as is the case today, is itself prophecy fulfilled.
This has been known for many years. Why the headlines because the Pope referred to it in his book on Jesus’ infancy? They make it sound like this is some big new claim that the Pope is making. Not so!
Maybe, but we don’t have a date for that, do we? Still, it wasn’t His incarnation or His birth that saved us from sin, although they were necessary parts of the plan. It was His death on the cross that paid the price. So, if I had the power to change the calendar (and I’m not Anti Christ, I won’t even try) I would start the calendar on the day of the crucifixion!
I see absolutely nothing wrong with taking an honest and frank review of the history of one’s religion. to confirm that it can withstand critical review.
After all, Mormons do this all the time!

Nine months before Christmas the Church celebrates the Annunciation. March 25. My point is that it should be a bigger celebration because it affirms our pro-life beliefs (God did not enter the world on Christmas, He entered it in Mary’s womb nine months earlier).
And it is the moment God intervened. Yes, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection are what make salvation possible. But once God entered the world, that was all a fait accompli. God would not fail.
Once again, SOOOOO glad to see the Church so totally focused on the most relevant and pressing issues of our day. /SARC SARC SARC SARC SARC SARC
OK, so everybody agrees that Jesus was not born on Dec 25, but you want to set March 25 as the day of His conception?
“I” don’t want to do anything. I merely pointed out that there already is a day set out to celebrate the Annunciation and that it might make sense for pro-life Christians to celebrate this day, for the reasons I pointed out above. The fact that it isn’t commercialized would be another good reason.
Celebrating that life begins 9 months before birth in this manner would be an excellent testimony. And people would instantly “get it” about being 9 months before Christmas.
Whether Jesus was actually born on December 25 or not.

I’m pro-life, but I see March 25 as a Catholic tradition. Look at all the other months that have been suggested for the birth of Jesus... how could you choose the “real” day of the Annunciation? My family celebrates Christmas on Dec 25, but my children understand that it is not a known fact that Jesus was born on this date, we don’t have any “happy birthday Jesus” cakes. That is just the day we, like the majority of Christians, chose to celebrate that event. But from there, to set a date for conception... maybe that’s fine with you as a Catholic.
If you can understand that Dec 25 is not likely Jesus’ birthday, but is the day we celebrate His birth, then you can understand that a day to celebrate His Incarnation in the womb is not the same as saying “this is infallibly the day Mary became pregnant.”
I am not suggesting a new holiday. It’s already on the church calendar.
I hope this isn't a shock to you, but maybe it isn't about just you.
As for, "being a silly notion", take it up with the one who conceived the notion in the first place. IMO, was brillant!

If they are really Christians then they are really celebrating the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ on those dates. Period. The fact that the dates we use were once pagan holy days is of no import. It the Christian effort to stamp out the pagan gods by supplanting them in the culture. It is similar to moslems building that stinking dome on the site of Solomon’s Temple.
