A far west suburban firefighter was mauled to death in her home by a 130- to 140-pound dog she and her husband had just taken in to avoid it being put down, authorities said.
Dawn Brown, a firefighter with the Bristol-Kendall Fire Department and a paramedic with the Big Rock Fire District, was found dead at the bottom of the basement stairs in her Big Rock home Monday afternoon.
The Kane County sheriffs department revealed Tuesday that Brown hadnt fallen. Her mastiff one of three dogs in the home killed her.
After authorities arrived, it took four officers to get the mastiff under control to remove it from the house, Kane County Sheriffs Lt. Pat Gengler said.
The dog was all muscle, very intimidating but had no history of being aggressive, he said.

Why didn’t they just shoot it like they do other family pets?
Any dog that size is inherently dangerous. Animals are unpredictable. One never knows what will set off an aggressive signal in their tiny brains. In that context, I am always amazed that families with small children would have ANY dog in the house. Then again, I am a city boy....
Inexperienced breeders will oft times breed brother to sister. Or too close a blood line which can sometimes enhance existing, but unknown faults. Nothing sadder than seeing a cow-hocked/roach-backed dog of an otherwise fine breed...
Before I finished reading the title my mind was already saying whattt??afemalefirefighter????
Your comment about handling a 130 lb dog is a bit off.
I have a mastiff....not the old English breed but an African mastiff.
He weighs in at the top of the breed standard at around 160.
If he lost his mind and attacked me it would be all over.
No way I could survive without a weapon in my hand.
I tip the scales at just under 280.
“and was at my side every day until his death.”
Ten minutes later.
Here’s one excellent reason to have a good dog; especially a good LARGE dog if you have children:

The golden retriever called ‘Angel’ who took on a mountain lion and saved his 11-year-old owner
How many children throughout history have likewise survived because of a good dog? You may owe your very existence in part to a dog which protected one of your ancestors from certain death.
No history of aggression that anyone would admit to?
BINGO same with cops...gender norming put females in places they shouldn’t be I wonder if a woman her size could pick me up same weight as that dog, and carry we out of a burning building....nope. It really is not in the best interest of public safety.
Very sad.
I am very skeptical of claims that there was no history aggression. Why was the family member having this dog put down?
“Animals are unpredictable.”
wrong. Much more predictable than humans.
