Career advice sought for daughter separating from Navy

My daughter who is currently in Naples, Italy is being separated unexpectedly from the Navy. Not sure if this will be Administrative or Honorable. She has a TS clearance and a clean Navy record except for failing PRT. She is planning on using the GI bill and continuing with college and applying in the mil contractor field when she is back stateside. She has college credits started towards a major in Criminology (she's changing it to Criminal Justice, she says) and minor in History. With everything that is going on with our military and 3 letter agencies, I'm concerned that this may not be the wisest choice when it comes to job choices or a degree. Can anyone give any solid alternative ideas for her to check into?

If she's getting a Honorable discharge, have her check out this web site. They list jobs only available to people with a security clearance:

yep, me too. Especially if her record is sterling, and she has had top ratings on her FITREPs.

So glad I’m no longer in the military...

I’m a senior chief... I can tell you she will be separated for failing the PRT but it well be honorable and won’t affect her job opportunities after... There are plenty of opportunities in criminal justice and an active TS will get her a higher salary. I think she is on the right track going into a fields with plenty of opportunity. Is she an MA?

I'm wondering what her job options are with having a TS clearance (Intel) beside contractor work or government agencies

Plenty of jobs for a TS cleared person, but she will need to move to the DC area for them.

If she is going to attend college full-time and is looking for work around her school schedule, she may wish to check with Home Depot. They seem to like to hire those just out of the military. I know several who worked there after completing their enlistments, while going to school. I think they even received tuition assistance from HD in addition to their GI Bill benefits (and HD pay).

Tell her to get her degree and then worry about a job....the new GI bill will cover all her edu and provide rent $...it isn’t like the old GI bill.

She has a good attitude so far. She worked hard, but didn’t make it this time. With the dang way they measure, she didn’t pass this time. Her neck is thin compared to her waist and hips. She had failed two and passed the one prior to this. But that makes 3 and she’s out. She’s going to ask the Command if she can stay until June (when she was supposed to transfer back stateside anyway) to get her affairs in order and also be there for the benefit of the Command. (They will be short without her.) She is very good at what she does.

Steer her away from Criminology; unless she plans to get a P.H.D. and teach. A degree in Criminology is superfluous if she plans to go into law enforcement of any kind, because they’ll teach her what they want her to know.

Concur with the assessment on the PRT issue. Do you know what rate she is, and what rank she’ll be discharged at?

Stay away from Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or anything of that ilk. I have a Masters in CJ Aministration, 11 years experience and never got a chance to use the degree. If you don’t have a rabbi, or a hook, you can NEVER get into any job worth the expense. I’d advise her to go into Safety, pollution control, HAZ-Mat or any of those other related areas. From cop to Safety was a $25,000 raise per year.

If the discharge is other than honorable, it may hinder her employment opportunities....I don’t believe that. Most HR people have no IDEA what a 214 is. They don’t know codes, MOS or any of that stuff unless they are a DOD contractor. And even then, pffft.

She is an IS, but she worked TAD in security aboard the Lincoln for 10 months, I believe.
