Hi FReepers...
For the last year, my wife and I have been giving serious consideration to moving our family out west.
We are born and raised New Englanders. We're a homeschooling family that enjoys outdoor mountain activities and also the arts and sciences.
We are looking for a conservative area [low taxes, less government, personal freedom, family friendly] and were wondering if anyone out there might have some recommendations. I have focused on Idaho and Montana, but am receptive to other suggestions.
I plan on making a trip out early next year to investigate... thanks in advance to all who reply!
Praying for the Lord to guide you and all who are in a similar situation!
Hate to contradict you Markey but the nursing jobs are all taken with plenty of applicants, at least in western Colorado. Unless you are a nurse with 20 plus years of experience, capable of running a department without help, you won’t find a nursing job.
Aw, say it ain’t so! I’m actually looking in to heading
to the panhandle. I think the thing is for conservatives
to migrate toward red COUNTIES, even if they don’t leave their states.
Any Florida freeper advice on the panhandle?
But he could still ride his pygmy pony, with his zircon encrusted tweezers gleaming in the moonlight.
SD even has decent skiing, though not a real long season most years.
Come to California. Anywhere south of San Francisco, where it starts to get cold.
It’s the most beautiful state with the best weather in the world.
And your business is swimming pools? We INVENTED them, for crying out loud.
Okay, the Romans did, but still. Everybody has them.
The housing market is depressed, and you will never pay less for a great house than right now.
Also, we need conservatives.
And contrary to what you hear, CA natives are great people. The Pelosi types? Not natives.
Consider Idaho Falls in southeast Idaho. Housing is reasonable, taxes are affordable, and the business climate is decent. Snake River goes right through town. Great recreation, hunting, fishing, etc. etc. etc. An earlier post stated not to consider Idaho if you are not a Mormom - I lived there for five years and did not find that to be a problem at all.
Give Wyoming a look-over. Harsh climate -yes; but still have less than 500,000 people with low taxes, no state income tax, and friendly/accommodating people. Incredible hunting, fishing, and plenty of rural areas to camp. Currently live in Cheyenne. Cheyenne is a little slow with growth but things are improving.
Wyoming hands down!
North Idaho is very different that the southern Idaho. I lived in Sandpoint, Idaho for 6 years. Before that it was upstate NY and now I am in Vermont so I know both regions. Sandpoint is a great place to live if you have a way to make a living. It has beautiful views, is conservative but has a balanced mix of cultures and is very family friendly. It is a great time to buy property there as prices are about half what they were when we moved there. The parades and festivals are fun. It is a tourist town so the restaurants are good. They just put in a byway so traffic through town is better. We found people from all areas of the US in Sandpoint. I recommend it and would still be there if I could.
Friends moved to Sandpoint area from Los Angeles about 20 years ago and LOVE it. She said it went 67% for Mitt.
As has been noted Idaho has the most independence for Home-school families of any state in the Union. No testing or curriculum requirements (other than the subjects you have to cover for graduation purposes). There also also a good number of organization to help home schooling families. As for the comment that you won't fit in unless your Mormon I respectfully disagree. I'm a Bible believing Christian get along just fine, don't even get people knocking on my door too often. Most folks around here are fine people so not a lot of problems getting along. I really do think of Idaho as the promised land.
It will be required that you pledge your allegiance to the Boise State and eat a baked potato to gain admittance to Bronco Nation. Just kidding of course.
Great, sounds like you are not going in blind. Best to you.
Rapid City, SD or Gillette, WY if you can put up with harsh winters. Both are small towns, in no income states, small metros, right to work states.
s/b ...no income tax states ....
Good post and makes sense. Thanks for registering to share that.
Check out Idaho Falls. Largest city of its size in US not to have a 4-year college. Some people think that’s a negative, but given the idiocy prevalent on college campuses (campii?) that’s a plus in my book.
THAT might work well....I’m in Jax..been in Tampa St Pete...forget Miami and Orlando (except The Villages)...I hear the Panhandle is beautiful also.
My son was stationed out at Ellsworth AFB a couple of years ago. I visited him out there once. I liked it, would definitely consider going back.
That’s an old comment Rush made after one of my calls to him regarding Obamacare back in 2009. I told him about the burgeoning medical industry in Costa Rica, that my employer (a very large health insurance company) was offering coverage for procedures performed in Costa Rica and even had formed a travel agency to help patients with travel arrangements. Not long after that call, Rush said that he’d have to go to Costa Rica for medical care if Obamacare became law.
Liberals being liberals, they either misunderstood or lied about the context and content of the comment immediately thereafter.
Hope that helps!
