If you've ever been stuck at New York's JFK airport or Newark International Airport you know all to well how depressing and inhospitable some of their terminals are.
If caught in weather delays, travelers can easily find themselves sitting on the floor for lack of seats, or tentatively using over-used bathrooms.
With that in mind, Frommers.com released to USA Today its choices of the 10 worst and best airport terminals. The travel guide site based its rankings on cleanliness, services, on-time departures, navigation, and ease of travel to and from a city's center.
New York JFK's terminal 3, used for Delta flights, was ranked as the worst layover location in the world. According to Frommers, it won its dubious distinction for its "endless immigration lines," bad food and shopping and gloomy environment. "There's also a sense that the cleaning crew gave up in despair a while ago," said Frommer's.com.
It's considered so bad that Nairobi's International airport, which Frommer's.com described as a "Third World construction site" and should be avoided, is ranked as a better layover choice.
The good news is that Delta is under going a $1.2 million renovation project to be completed by 2013.
In total, four of the 10 world's worst terminals are in the U.S.

So who’s gunna fly anymore? The Obamaphone owners? Put it on an EBT card?
Oh, it’s the 1% who all voted for Obozo...flying off to their dachas.
The Delta Terminal at LAX should be on any worst list.
The Hajj Terminal shouldn’t even be on the list: it serves only a specialty purpose, for a limited time. If you only have one thing to do, then you’d better be good at it.
It’s been a long time, but I HATED the terminals at Newark. All I can remember is that each seat had these little B/W televisions on them, and that they took quarters ... but there was no place to get the quarters! Grey, depressing, horrible acoustics ... Dante would have included it had Virgil shown it to him.
It should also be noted that one of the things which makes Singapore Changi International such a great airport is superb security organization. You don't even know you are being watched and profiled. Each gate has its own security clearance as people assemble to board. You will occasionally get wanded a second time, but generally by a beautiful shapely Asian girl who is about as pleasant as your typical unionized TSA slob is unpleasant.
Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria should have been on that list. It’s so bad the FAA refused to certify it for access by American air carriers. Avoided it for 12 years on the African continent, only to be stuck there on the final flight out. The place damned near killed me. WAWA!
I nominate Kilimanjaro International Airport outside Arusha, Tanzania, as one of the worst.
Kigali International in Kigali, Rwanda, is not a garden spot, either, although Kigali City is a vibrant, booming city since the genocide ended.
Amsterdam Schipol is one of the best.
Detroit International Airport is beautiful now - go figure.
Midway Airport in Chicago has been renovated and really does not deserve to be on the list. The International Terminal at ORD Chicago is dismal and should be on the list.
I like Midway. I find it much easier to get in and out of than O’Hare.
“2. Manila, Philippines Airport Terminal 1”
I travel to the RP on business and family matters.
Hands down the most corrupt terminal in the world. Where on earth are you able to “pay cash” just to use the toilet, for tissue in the toilet, and just to “process the passport”? You lost something? You have to pay cash to the security guys. Not only that, these cretins try to harass you outside just for the sake of bringing your stuff to your destination.
Not even NY’s JFK can do that.
“So whos gunna fly anymore? The Obamaphone owners? Put it on an EBT card?”
Obama phone? I had an idiot send me a snopes story about how the obama phone is due to a tax increase during Reagan’s term.
What an idiot......
Only $1.2 million? That won't go very far!
Regards,
Except for international, my wife and I never go to O’Hare. Midway is much better, and they rarely have weather issues. But, it is often very exciting to land at Midway - coming in hot the pilots use thrust reversers and maximum braking. It was really “fun” back in the day to go into Midway on a 757 - wow! Takeoff in a 757 was, shall we say, exhilirating....LOL.
Midway has a nice food court. It's not that bad.
Candidates for worse than Midway: some PHX terminals, plus it is 1.5 miles from end to end of PHX; San Antonio is cramped, Dulles, Miami.
My worst experience was the international terminal at Miami. It's not their fault in a way, it's just too busy. Everything in the Caribbean and South America seems to go through there. I remember a poor guy near the back of the line who was desperate to get checked in because his flight was leaving. He was pleading for people to let him jump the line. We let him through. This was back in 1985. I'm not sure it would happen that way today.
