The conversation was about internet marketing and it was with my friend Jon Gibbon of armslist.com. Then out of the blue Jon asked me “If you could only have one gun the rest of your life what would it be?” “Hmmm…I guess it would be my Remington 870.” I figured I could hunt big and small game, defend the home patch and nothing stops like a 12 gauge slug. You can stop a charging dump truck with a 12 gauge slug.

Then the conversation moved to: What would you take if you could only have five guns the rest of your life? Yes, I know this is America, and we have the luxury of owning as many guns as we would like. I’m a person that gets a Christmas card from Ruger. I have four 30-06’s and was disappointed that in 2006 there wasn’t a parade in honor of its 100th anniversary.

It's a great rifle. .22s are good for training and taking small game. Get familiar with it, be safe with it, shoot it lots and clean it well, and you can hand it off to your grandchildren.

Every tool in the toolbox has it's function. Same with firearms. Get the ones you need. Need can be defined as 'fun to shoot'. ;)

Browning Buckmark...

I sold mine. To someone who could put it to good use. It shot so much better than me, it was a waste for me to own it. I don't do great with pistols after about 3 meters.

But the kid I sold it to... he could make it tap-dance at 25 meters. Sweet, sweet weapon. All hail Browning.

Pretty much describes my ‘collection’.
- Mossberg 500 12g pump
-Winchester 300 win mag
-.357 and a .38 revolvers

Sort of one of each, long range, short range, two revolvers (on for the wife) and a 10/22 just for fun and keeping in practice without the expense of 300 win mag ammo.

Pretty paltry compared to most enthusiasts, but enough for the task at hand. Lots of primers and powder for the 357 and 300.

I have the Buckmark Plus UDX with the slabside barrel, fingergrooved frontstrap, and laminated wood grips...

I've owned and or shot the Colt Woodsman, the Smith 41, and several variations of the Ruger Marks.

The Browning is far and away my favorite of them all.

Sadly, in my hands, it's as effective as a Jennings 9-shot revolver with a loose barrel.

Mine went to a good home where it could live up to it's potential. Beautiful weapon.

Rifles, on the other hand, those I can be effective with.

My list is about the same as yours, just different brands. For the S&W 686, I would substitute a more concealable snubby revolver.

Problem with all those uppers in different calibers, is how do you instantly know which ammo to grab, and which magazines?

I have avoided getting back into a multi-caliber collection for just this reason: too many different boxes of ammo to sort through. Also allows me to focus on plenty of ammo for what I have. I try to combine function as in an AR-10 type rifle for both long range and battle useage. Shotgun is unique of course.

I love guns, but buying another collection is hard to justify once retired.....

Colt Rail Gun (.45), Beretta 92fs (9mm), M4gery (5.56mm), Rem 11-87 (12 gauge), and M24 (.300 Win Mag).

These have the ability to reach out and touch someone from inches to 1000 meters. They can be used for everything from small to big game, less perhaps elephants. There is an abundance of ammo to be scavanged for the first four if the SHTF.
