- Arthur Compton wires Groves that he was having problems with Szilard and suggests that the "ARMY FOLLOW HIS MOTIONS BUT NO DRASTIC ACTION NOW". Two days later he will wire that the situation was stabilized which saved Szilard from Groves who has prepared a letter to the U.S. Attorney General that would have declared Szilard and "enemy alien" and interned him for the duration of the war.
- The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands the carrier Hornet is sunk and the Enterprise is damaged. The Japanese carriers Zuiho and Shokaku are significantly damaged. Since Vice Admiral Nobutake Kondo knew the offensive against Henderson field had failed anyway he did not press the attack with his remaining carriers.
