The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights has warned Americans not to elect Republican Mitt Romney in next months presidential election, saying that doing so would be a democratic mandate for torture.
The UNs Ben Emmerson was referring to Romneys refusal to rule out the use of waterboarding in interrogating terror detainees, a practice that President Barack Obama has ended.
Colin Perkel of The Canadian Press reported Emmersons remarks from a symposium in Toronto on the impact of 9/11 on human rights:
"The re-introduction of torture under a Romney administration would significantly increase the threat levels to (Americans) at home and abroad," Emmerson said.
"Such a policy, if adopted, would expose the American people to risks the Obama administration is not currently exposing them to."
U.S. intelligence services were able to pinpoint Osama bin Ladens location and carry out the successful mission to kill him in May 2011 based on information yielded during waterboarding of 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and information from Al Qaeda operative Hassan Ghul, who was captured in Iraq in 2004.
Obama opposed both waterboarding and the Iraq War, without which bin Laden would not have been found.
Emmerson warned that Romney could reinstate waterboarding if he took office. He also criticized the Obama administrations drone program--an initiative begun by the Bush administration but accelerated by President Obama, partly because of his reluctance to capture, detain or interrogate terror suspects.
In a second term, Obama may renew efforts to close the Guantanámo Bay prison, despite widespread public opposition.

How long must we endure this while the wanna-be’s embarrass themselves at our expense?
Do they realize how much of a joke they have become? Has the -un- won any Nobel Peace Prizes? They deserve a whole wheelbarrow full.
The objective of campaign planners is to have the popularity of the candidate peak *just* at the time of the elections. Hopefully, the majority of the populace won't be swayed by last-minute bologna and stay on track in consideration of the economic picture of the last four years.
Please excuse tardiness of response (old, slow person here).
Initially, the appeal of the concept of “United Nations” is understandable. “War to end all wars,” etc. What wasn’t evident is the honey-dipped bayonet behind the intent.
Hopefully, we’ll keep our eye on the prize and then prioritize and address the remainder of our concerns sequentially.
How ‘bout Romney kindly reminding the General Assembly that they can leave at any time, for any reason.
Well Just Damn, and here I was ready to vote for Mitt and the UN says don’t do it. So many allegiances, so little time.
Maybe a multipronged approach?
Lol!
Yes. There are lots of potential projects up for consideration after the election. Protecting our military, revising rules of engagement, undoing foreign policy gaffes, repairing the economy, repairing the legal system—we’ll never be bored!
Would it still be considered water boarding if we substituted pig’s blood instead?
“If Romney would promise to personally waterboard a terrorist AT HIS INAUGRUATION I would swear to physically drag at least 10 people to the polls to vote for him”
Gee, that’s not very nice, waterboarding Obama at Romney’s inauguration.
The UN should pack its bags and depart for some other country. They have worn out their welcome here. And isnt it illegal for foreign citizens to interfere in our elections? I thought they could be deported for that. Certainly, I had Australian friends who were threatened with deportation and tortured for more than 10 years over giving a party for a local election candidate. Back in the 1970s it cost them about $100,000 to get out of that.
FUUN!
I feel the same way when foreigners tell me how to vote as I do when celebrities do it.
bttt
It took seven years for the spooks to figure out where OBL was hiding? Forget Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his information, forget waterboarding! What about the Pakistani Doctor who cooperated with the CIA to uncover OBL's hiding place? Screw the UN Special Rapporteur and his talking points. Pull his diplomatic passport and expel his creepy ass for interference in things way above his pay grade.
US out of the UN, UN out of the US!

We could have the New York city Health Department declare the building as "unfit for human habitation". Then have the NYCFD condemn the building as an "unsafe fire hazard".
Maybe Donald Trump could offer to use the site for a new condo development and the city could seize the property under "Eminent Domain" to increase property tax revenues.
