(CNN) -- Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison for bankrolling a deadly dogfighting ring, now has a dog.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," he said in a statement released Thursday. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals."

He added that "our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

Therefore if ANYONE is IN CHRIST, he is a NEW CREATURE; the old things passed away; behold, NEW THINGS HAVE COME.

So if a child molester claims he has accepted Christ then you will let him take your kids, if you have any camping for the weekend?

If yes you are an idiot and enabler.

If no you are a hypocrite.

I don't believe a claimed acceptance of Christ changes a person's nature, but then again I live in the real world.

I’m curious as well. My nephew has a pit bull, and she’s the sweetest dog you’d ever want to see. Given Vick’s history with the breed, I don’t think it would be a good choice.

Perhaps something small, like a terrier or pom, would be good for the kids without being too similar to the breed that he was using in the dog fighting.

If an alcoholic has indeed recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body he can go anywhere and be around anyone as long as the motive is proper.

Vick continues to do his work with children to inform them and continues to work with the humane society.

I am willing to take the man at his word

“Ron Mexico” better not try to pick up his dog, or he’ll fumble it like he does everything else.

But if the dog ever turns on him, he won’t need to worry — the refs will just throw a flag for ‘unnecessary roughness’ like they do every time he’s touched.

“Excuse me! This man served his time in prison. It is a small person that would not give him another chance to prove himself to be a good citizen. I have needed a second chance in life, but I guess that you never have.”

I fully agree with you. I don’t agree with what he did at all. However, he served his sentence, he has behaved like a reformed citizen since being released. In addition he lost over 90 million dollars with his tragic mistake. I am not sure how much more he can be punished. Instead, I believe he is making the most out of his second chance, and it has been quite impressive.

Thank you.

True forgiveness is the hardest part of the Christian ethic, so it’s understandable why some have difficulty with it.

I am beyond disgusted. Mr Vick, with the benevolent HSUS' sanction, now has a DOG??? So much for punishment, so much for giving other, lesser known dog abusers an example of what happens to monsters.

This proves what a joke the Humane Society of the United States is. They do not care about animals, all they care about is the almighty dollar. I hope they can sleep at night. That poor animal.

The guy served his time, lost boat loads of money, paid the price for his sins...

It’s not like he murdered children or raped nuns ....

Not condoning his actions , but give it a rest...

Why should his children not enjoy a dog....?

This guy is atotal s.o.b. He belongs in a cage or 6 feet under. The only thing worse than him are the “fans” who support him and his team.

He should never be allowed to have another animal. Anyone who did the depraved and evil things he did to innocent creatures should not be given a second chance.

“They do not care about animals, all they care about is the almighty dollar. I hope they can sleep at night.”

I’m sure they sleep just fine.

I’ve heard that mattresses stuffed with hundred dollar bills are extremely comfortable.

I *used* to support my local animal shelter but just found out that *every* black or gray cat is euthanized instantly to ‘keep them from becoming animal sacrifices’, as though ~all~ people seeking to adopt them are psycho pagans.

I don’t like cats but I hate that they’re killed for the color of their fur.

Now I only support legitimate breed club rescues.

The rest of them can eff off.

I agree.

What he did was despicable and he paid the price.

I will say something that will probably get me hammered but I have done so before. :) I think he regarded the dogs as a business and consequently had no attachment to them. Was it wrong? He!! yes. But there is what we would consider abusive treatment in legal animal sporting events. An example, horse racing. Those horses, for the most part are not treated as a pet would be. In fact, I have had severe guilt lately watching a legal sport I love.

I don't think Vick would have the same feelings toward a pet dog that his children love and may sleep with at night.

Anybody can change how they feel. Not everybody stays at the same place in their lives.

That being said, if he is caught again perpetrating animal abuse...send him to the cornfield.

This guy should have been Pit bait. (& that should be the standard punishment for every person convicted of dog fighting. Because I think it might stop some people before they start)
