Does any one have any experience or insight into fighting Walmart expansion that they would be willing to share?
WE do 98% of our grocery shopping at Kroger (which is unionized) - they beat WalMart on MOST prices. Further - WalMart doesn’t carry fresh meats - it is all water-injected, pre-processed garbage from a factory somewhere, and their seafood is often imported frozen from China.
It's called globalization. You can choose to dislike it, but you can't choose to ignore it.
Someday, the standard of living in China will rise to the point that cheap labor will find somewhere else to go.
This is Free Republic. Is this a trick question?
SERIOUSLY? Are you a freeper or a liberal in disguise?
Do you not believe in Capitalism?
Unless there is enough community opposition that the elected officials fear for their careers in retaliation for allowing the re-zoning you’re gonna be SOL.
Karl Marx was a globalist Free Trader too. No thanks.

You don't get to pick and choose how you want the economy to work, I'm sorry to say.
Walmart is planning a new store by us, a couple miles from one that is way too small. When they had the public comment time at zoning meeting, no one said a word, now suddenly, the anti Wal-Mart crowd is all up in arms and wants the project stopped. Sorry gang, it’s unconstitutional to change the law after the fact. You had your chance and blew it.
Good luck! They have been fought from coast to coast and rarely lose. At the end of the day you may hold them up for a couple of years but they will win out as will your attorneys whose fees you will pay.
That was one helluva funny South Park. And the moral of the story was spot on too.
Excuse me?
For the record I am opposed to practically everything that unions represent in general, and public sector unions in particular.
I like that Walmart is non-union, but I have never liked Walmart enough to have ever shopped there.
I have never been a union member, rather I have always been a business owner since graduate school. Two businesses in fact, neither of which is a competitor to what Walmart peddles.
That having been said, your ignorant crack goes unappreciated. The complexity of the thread issue apparently exceeds your capacity to comprehend.
We need to put up strong tariffs against countries like China.
I never voted on moving our means of production overseas. This has national security implications. It needs to stop asap. There are flights daily to China I suggest anyone that likes the current state of affairs get on one and join their partners in the globalist world.
I believe in private property rights. If you own the land, don’t lease it to them.
Tell that to local farmers in communities all over the US that supply WalMart with fresh produce............
My main issues with Walmart.
1) Way to much stuff from China. Why not import more from other counties ?
2) They stopped selling Sam’s Club Water in their vending machines.
3)Some of the stores took away their outside benches.
If the other stores are that close, are you sure it’s not a Neighborhood Market going in?
Why don’t you post this over at Democratic Underground. I’m sure they will be glad to help you.
Personally I love WalMart.
I suppose you buy all your groderies at a mom and pop store for double the price instead of a chain supermarket?
