Baseball's Wild Finish

On Wednesday night, in the midst of a presidential debate, the baseball season came to a close. Although the season didn’t close with as many fireworks as last season, it did have something just as special; something that hasn’t happened in 45 years. Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers won baseball’s Triple Crown. For those who don’t know, the Triple Crown is only achieved when a batter leads the league in home runs, runs batted in (RBIs), and batting average. The fact that it hasn’t been done since Carl Yastrzemski did it in 1967 speaks to how extraordinarily difficult it is to accomplish, especially when you consider all the great hitters there have been in that time that failed to do it. It is truly unbelievable, and Kansas City fans, once again, showed how classy they were by recognizing the accomplishment of an opposing player by giving him a standing ovation and a curtain call.

Congrats to Cabrera, its only been done 17 times.

There is also the “true triple corwn” where the player not only leads his league in the three categories but all of MLB.

Only 4 have done it:

Rogers Hornsby (1925), Lou Gehrig (1934), Ted Williams (1942) and Mickey Mantle (1956).

Also, Hornsby & Williams are the only two to win any version of it twice.

It was classy considering the fact that they knew their team was playing the last game of the season yet more than 30,000 of them showed up anyway.

It was a very classy move by Royals fans. Now if the Royals management could just put together a team that could finish better than 18 games under .500. Haven’t made the playoffs since 1985. Oh well, there’s always next year. Cheers.
