In response to recent articles in mainstream military journals discussing the use of the U.S. Army to quell insurrections on American soil, I offer an alternate vision of the future. Instead of a small town in the South as the flash point, picture instead a score of U.S. cities in the thrall of riots greater than those experienced in Los Angeles in 1965 (Watts), multiple cities in 1968 (MLK assassination), and Los Angeles again in 1992 (Rodney King). New Yorkers can imagine the 1977 blackout looting or the 1991 Crown Heights disturbance. In fact, the proximate spark of the next round of major riots in America could be any from a long list cribbed from our history.
We have seen them all before, and we shall see them all again as history rhymes along regardless of the century or the generation of humankind nominally in control of events. But the next time we are visited by widespread, large-scale urban riots, a dangerous new escalation may be triggered by a fresh vulnerability: Its estimated that the average American home has less than two weeks of food on hand. In poor minority areas, it may be much less. What if a cascading economic crisis, even a temporary one, leads to millions of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards flashing nothing but ERROR? This could also be the result of deliberate sabotage by hackers, or other technical system failures. Alternatively, the government might pump endless digits into the cards in a hopeless attempt to outpace future hyperinflation. The government can order the supermarkets to honor the cards, and it can even set price controls, but historys verdict is clear: If suppliers are paid only with worthless scrip or blinking digits, the food will stop.

Poor guy. I really wasn’t trying to put Mr. Denny in a bad light. I’m just trying to learn the right tactics in an incredible situation.
I imagine that any of us could be taken unaware.
But that was then - a different age, a different time.
Me? I expect it. Especially with a Romney win - or loss.
The Scarlett Plague by Jack London can be read online here:

This quite possibly was the inspiration or model for the book "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart and published in 1949. The final theme in "Earth Abides" is much the same as the theme of "The Scarlett Plague" - to pass knowledge down to the next generations.
"Earth Abides" is still a pretty good read even though it was published well over 60 years ago. The core challenges faced by survivors are universal and timeless.
“Lots of folks are only walking around peacefully today because of their modern and effective antipsychotic meds.”
I was a licensed EMT and I've got medical equipment and various meds. I was also a licensed psychological examiner and professional counselor - maybe I could calm down some of those mental cases who won't have their usual meds.
Most people don’t know that smaller elements of race rioting took place in many cities around the nation that week, because of the video.
On a small scale, those kind of attacks happen in certain areas of some cities, at any time, and are unrelated to rioting, they are just racial attacks at stop lights and such.
You might have to, in between dodging axe blows.
“”You need to educate yourself.
See what happened recently next door in Louisianian. They not only fled en mass, but were found looting etc.””
BTW, the above was directed at the first person listed at the To: box. You were just pinged to see the response to ansell2.

Uh, I also have this med: a Ruger 38 special with hollow points.
And lots and lots of ammo....
My future wife said ruh-ro, down shifted, floored it and aimed for the middle of the group. You wouldn't believe how fast they got out of the way. Mind you this was a little Suzuki Samurai and this was her first day driving stick.
Now you know why I married her. BTW, she's a Psych major and said she knew the would back down.

There are no tactics in that situation. Denny was simply delivering a load of sand, when he drove into a bad situation where people were yelling at him to stop. He didn't have a clue what was happening at the time.
90 percent of people are not prepared for a sudden violent event where they're totally outnumbered. Even trying to shoot your way out, you'll possibly still be overwhelmed.
Denny should have floored it, even though it would mean running over dozens of people, even then he might not have made it.
He was caught totally off guard and was too nice of guy to begin with. Some years late, he shook hands with one of the attackers on some talk show.
Bottom line is ya don't want to be in the wrong place during an event such as this. Problem is, ya don't know when or where it's going to happen.
I was there in 92. It was total chaos.
Something that is very difficult to find, is the first 13 seconds or so of the video before the beating started, it shows King getting up and lunging for Powell’s throat with both hands.
The media cut that portion and it keeps getting pulled from youtube.
Most Midwestern/east coast cities experience loss of power frequently, and sometimes for extended periods. This generally does not occur on most of west coast with that kind of regularity, mostly due to less sever winters/pacific influence.
Roll ‘em up, lock ‘em, and floor it!
In November, 2006, Tongans, who identify as a devote Christian nation, looted and burned down their capital city. My husband and I flew out 2 years earlier on the same commercial plane with the prince when a secret coup was threatened. If this is what unhappy “Christians” would do, I hate to think of what’s going to happen to our cities.
I think you misread my comment. I was responding to a comment that blacks have been fleeing the cities based on decreasing percentages of the populution.
My point was that decreasing percentage was due not flight, but to an increasing hispanic population.
There are plenty of hard working blacks and hispanics. A scenario like this might in fact break far more along the logical socio-economic lines than racial. I would say that is especially true with hispanics.
She passed a MAJOR acid test on that day!
Remember the blackout that hit the NE a few years ago? People were helpless with no power. They can be lucky it wasn't freezing outside.
Yeah, I think Denny was in a semi, and I wondered why he didn’t just run the thugs over, too. All I can think is that the situation was so unexpected and happened so fast he didn’t know what to do.
If I remember correctly he had both driver’s and passenger’s- side windows open, and the doors were unlocked so as he slowed down it was easy for the thugs to climb on the truck, get the door open and pull him out.
I think after witnessing the event on tv, lots of us remember the horror of the situation and the reporter in the helicopter screaming “Where are the police? There are no police!”, so in the future in similar situations thugs WILL be run down. Now, I never drive with doors unlocked and windows open-and I definitely WOULD run people down who were trying to stop me.
Now you know why I married her. BTW, she's a Psych major and said she knew the would back down.

Excellent!
If I'm ever in that sort of situation, I'll need to remember that mobs are made up of individuals who, on their own, would lose at the game of “chicken”
I'm also glad that ya’ll escaped that potentially life threatening situation - smart gal you have there :)

Were you caught in the riot itself? Ghastly!
You make a good point about not knowing when or where.
With the oil boom, traffic has changed here in Odessa because of folks coming in from out of state. I’m often stuck in long lines of traffic. How would I know, if instead of slow traffic signals ahead, that traffic wasn’t stopped due to a spontaneous riot?
I would be totally unprepared in that instance.
