MANILA, Philippines Termites, storms and neglect have damaged part of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos' legendary collection of shoes and other possessions left behind after she and her dictator husband were driven into US exile by a 1986 popular revolt.
Hundreds of pieces of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' clothing, including the formal native see-through barong shirts he wore during his two-decade rule, have also begun to gather mold and fray after being stored for years without protection at the presidential palace and later at Manila's National Museum, officials told The Associated Press on Sunday.

I hope FLOTUS sees this and donates her collection to the Smithsonian....we wouldn't want the tarnish of this kind of international embarrassment.

Imelda is still alive - why don’t they give her back her shoes?

One of my best friends spent a couple of years in the Philippines. He dated one of the country’s top models. They were eating at a restaurant and noticed Imelda at a nearby table.
He is the kind of guy who can go up to anyone and end up being their friend. They said hello to her and he said she was very gracious.
He showed me several pictures of them all posing together.

Truth of the matter is that there were hundreds of small shoe manufacturers in the Philippines and they all wanted to advertise that the First Lady wore shoes that they made. To promote the industry Imelda accepted the shoes ceremoniously.
Funny how a media meme obscures the truth.
