Less than 10 percent of the coral reefs in the Caribbean show living coral cover and are on the verge of utter devastation, a new study reported in the Guardian states.
Global warming, pollution and overexploitation are the main causes for the damage to reefs, Carl Gustaf Lundin, a director at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, ..
"The major causes of coral decline are well-known and include overfishing, pollution, disease and bleaching caused by rising temperatures resulting from the burning of fossil fuels," Lundin said. ..

Global warming is a big factor with coral reefs, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration points out, as more bleaching and infections break out when temperatures rise. Also more carbon dioxide in the air alters the chemistry of the oceans, and slight changes in acidity could alter the growth rates of coral.
However, ScienceDaily, in reporting the work of researchers of Australia's Great Barrier Reef, quoted Terry Hughes of James Cook University: "The good news is that, rather than experiencing wholesale destruction, many coral reefs will survive climate change by changing the mix of coral species as the ocean warms and becomes more acidic."

Here’s sand in your snorkel .. the days I remember were cloudy due to storm passing thru .. the reefs near St Johns and St. Thomas had been damaged pretty bad .. Oh well, that’s mother nature.
Racism. He forgot to include racism.
in the history of this planet, how many coral reefs do you imagine might have come and gone?
I’m assuming they’re like trees. One dies and another replaces it.
Yes they do, but they take longer to grow than most trees.
GO to Russia, Perm and see the Great Permian Reef, hundreds of millions of years old, but dead.
Same for the fossil coral reef outside of Stroudsburg, PA.
They come, they go.
No reefs, no problem.
Sucks to be a fish there. Kinda like being born in Detroit.

Ok, tell me how much the ocean tempurature has risen in the last 20 years, when you were decrying the total loss of the coral reefs before. One degree? Three degrees? How much variance is there in the ocean throughout that entire region? Five degrees? ten?
They had me until ‘Global Warming’.
While the ocean gets too warm in one area, it would be getting just warm enough for coral in another area.
IF it’s global warming then they are doomed because the environmental phonies have absolutely no plan to reduce carbon “pollution”. The rates will only increase from our commie friends in China. And this article says 90% of the coral is gone and it can’t withstand the tiniest changes.
Just saying. I’m sure the article is 75% bs, though coral reefs are fragile.
Most of that article is bunk.
One study in the late 1990's said:
Our results suggest that coral growth (extension) rates alone are poor indicators of coral reef health, particularly where anthropogenic eutrophication may play a role in reef degradation. This study documented normal coral growth rates on reefs undergoing net reef erosion. (emphasis added)
That is, they grow, and decline, and then grow again. Overall, coral reefs grow and decline in rhythm not well documented by honest science these days.
“The major causes of coral decline are well-known and include overfishing, pollution, disease and bleaching caused by rising temperatures resulting from the burning of fossil fuels,” Lundin said...
Racism. He forgot to include racism.”
And he forgot George Bush.
Apparently, now we have the "Reefers".
This isn’t about the reefs. Its about using propaganda about reefs to gain support for additional socialist controls over Americans. Oh and redistribution of wealth.
“The major causes of coral decline are well-known and include overfishing, pollution, disease and bleaching caused by rising temperatures resulting from the burning of fossil fuels,”
Idiocy stated as fact. I loathe these people.
Look up in the sky on a clear day. What do you see?
It’s not difficult - at all.
