The Tomboy character Jo went on a nun's retreat in one episode and decided to become a nun. She wanted to slow down and thank God,and do something worthwhile. Also,Mrs. Garrett mentioned her faith and that no one could shake it.
I was floored! They mentioned God in a positive way,not a mocking way. Why can't more shows be like this?
Because liberalism is so totally in control of the entertainment industry, positive messages about religion are just not permitted anymore.
Positive messages about homosexuality are in, positive messages about religion are verboten. Liberals run the entertainment business, and their liberal views are the only ones allowed.
Today the tomboy character would be a lesbian.
I cringe to think what the next thirty years will bring.
From what I understand Blair(Lisa Whelchel) was (still is) a devout Christian during he time on the show, and would not participate in plots that involved premarital sex.
Also being the 80s, I’m not surprised that such a display of faith was a part of a popular sitcom and not shown in a negative light.
These days this show wouldn’t make it to air unless half of the girls were lesbians and already had 2 abortions.
There was an episode of Laverne & Shirley in which they ran into a long-lost friend of theirs from high school (who may have been a bit wild then?) and she had become a nun. As I recall the nun character was treated with humor and respect.
Man, I loved the ‘80’s! When Reagan won the presidential election I was ecstatic. The Reagan years were truly filled with real hope and change. It was “Morning in America” and everything was looking up. I’ve never felt so positive about the direction of the country and the world since.
I know she liked boys a lot.
You’re right about the lesbian thing.
IIRC, the actress who played Natalie is a lesbian.
Nowadays that would be mocked.
I’ve seen that episode several times and loved how Laverne brought out all the Catholic items.
I believe she put out a big Bible as well.
And Shirley was very careful about what she said,LOL.
I was 5 when the assassination attempt on Reagan took place. I don’t remember much about the 80’s,except that school was rough because of the nasty kids.
She is?
On ‘Good Times’,Florida Evans was a devout Christian,as was Florence Johnston from ‘The Jeffersons’.
I was working midnight shift at the time. When I woke up in the late afternoon and heard President Reagan was shot I was crushed.
Thank God he survived and led this nation and the world towards freedom.
I remember ALF as well. I’ve been watching reruns on the Hub and it’s still a funny show but somewhat dated.
And they’re supposed to be the tolerant ones.
