I use AVG, Spybot-Search and Destroy, Adaware and Iobit Advanced System Care, including Iobit Malware Fighter.

This stuff blew by all of it.

That saved my computer more that once, even when Microsoft was stupidly saying that malware wasn't a threat. Watch when installing to make sure you don't add any toolbars you don't want. I get better results with the quick scan option than I do with the full scan.

Download malwarebytes on the machine you are on now. Install the program on a USB storage drive. Boot your infected machine in safe mode. Stick the USB drive in and run malwarebytes.

After downloading Anti-Malwarebytes from the link in post 2 possibly try running your PC in safe mode if too many weird things are going on in the background.

What point does it lock up? If it will let you get anywhere into windows ( normal or safe mode ), ASAP open your task manager and end every process the computer will let you.

Start your computer in safe mode.

Perform a “system restore” to the date prior to your infection.

Download and run malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org

Remove AVG and instead use Microsoft Security Essentials

If all else fails and if malwarebytes doesn’t work, restart in safe mode (with networking).

Download combofix from “bleepingcomputer.com”

Run combofix.

Lastly, if none of this works, find a local computer geek who will clean it for about $50.

Will that work? Don't you have to actually perform the install on the infected computer before malwarebytes will run?

In other words, I've always downloaded the INSTALLATION file to a USB drive, then moved over to the infected computer and installed the software using the USB drive.

If you install it to the USB drive on the non-infected computer, the registry entries that the application requires to run will only be set up on the non-infected computer. So moving the USB drive with the software installed doesn't seem like it would work since the registry on the infected computer hasn't been told how to run everything.

I'm happy if you're right, since it would save me a step, but I don't see how a non stand-alone application like malwarebytes could be run that way.

Backup Imaging

Learn to use it! It will save hours of aggravation.

I first started using an imaging backup system with my XP machine. The imaging backup program I used was CloneGenius, later renamed Spotmau Data Backup. http://http://www.spotmau.com/

I now use a Win7 Samsung Laptop and Gateway Desktop. Both have ‘pre-installed’ imaging capabilities.

With the XP and both Win7 machines, the image backup has saved me several times. The great thing about an ‘up to date’ image backup is that it puts the OS drive back as it was at the time of the backup. The only installations needed are new programs and upgrades made after the image was created.

I also partition my OS drive. I keep the programs and OS on one partition and my data on a separate partition. That way, my data is untouched if the OS drive has problems. AND, I frequently backup my data files to an external USB drive. Buy one — they are cheap — and use it frequently. If data files are worth saving, they worth backing up.
