First you need to stop for a moment, or for more then a moment and think about importance of the water. There is a all kind of cool information about water all around the net. And you can research them all.

I like the Katadyn Hiker PRO Microfilter (for $70, claimed 200 gallon capacity) if you’re looking for water while traveling or the Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter ($245, claimed 13,000 gallon capacity) for long term purification in the woods or a remote area. Both are light, effective, and durable.
My plan is to stay home and if necessary purify stream water using a Katadyn, but preferably power my well pump from solar - and I have a spare well pump.
Someone was mentioning the other day that those school crossing signs have solar power. I wonder what they meant.

I had a minor problem with some gallon jugs of water I stored in the garage for toilet and radiator use. When I went to recycle after 6 moths, there was mold in the bottom of the containers. How do you avoid this?
Search the interwebs for this: SODIS. Very inexpensive, very effective.

I’ve used Katadyn products out hiking. They take a little work to get the water but are very effective.
The mold was probably caused by contaminants which were in the jugs before the water was added. Either that or the water wasn’t pure.
You can reduce it by sanitizing the jugs before adding water.
They meant that if things go bad, the first person to show up gets themself a free solar electricity generating system.
is it wrong that i just plan on drinking homebrew beer for my longterm solution? I do however have about a 5 year supply of Q-Tonic water stored up, doubles as an anti-malarial and reduces the effects of restless-leg syndrome.
I have three Katadyn syphon water purifiers. Yes, they work. I think mine are 13,000 gallons each. The Big Berkey came out some years after I got the Katadyns, so I got the Berkey. The Big Berkey is better than the Katadyn. Look up the Big Berkey on the web and compare what it removes to a Katadyn. If you can, get the Berkey.

If you filled gallon jugs yourself and there was contaminate of some kind in there (like minute amounts of whatever was in there before), mold could grow.
Heat is the enemy of long term storage. I don’t store bought jugged water or any food in a hot garage.
I’d love to have one of these sealed and chlorinated in my basement. But my doors are only 32” wide and these suckers are 40” wide. I’ll have to keep on using 55 gal. blue barrels.
