Came from an underwater volcano.
The New Zealand Navy announced today that they have found a patch of floating volcanic pumice from an underwater volcano floating about 600 miles off the shore of New Zealand.
The rock looked to be sitting two foot (half a meter) above the surface of the waves and lit up a brilliant while colour in the spotlight. It looked exactly like the edge of an ice shelf, said Lieutenant Tim Oscar aboard the ship the HMNZS Canterbury.
Scientists aboard the ship said the white pumice which covers 10,000 square miles ( 26,000 sq km) probably came from an underwater volcano called Monowai, which has been active recently, but that it was unrelated to other increased volcanic activity in New Zealand this week.
I wonder what is heating our seas? And I wonder how many fish will dies as a result of this eruption?

marvelous,...how can this happen?
That is incredible.
QUICK
Someone call Lava soap company and give them the coordinates of this thing!
There must be a market just waiting for this opportunity! It must be a great soil additive in gardens!
Oh, PUMICE. And not pumas. Okay.

Caddyshack (1980)
Sandy: I want you to kill every gopher on the course!
Carl Spackler: Check me if I’m wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they’re gonna lock me up and throw away the key...
Sandy: Gophers, ya great git! The gophers! The little brown furry rodents!
Carl Spackler: We can do that; we don’t even have to have a reason.
Well, dust my pumice!
Pumice floats on water because the rock has so many air pockets trapped inside it. So, a really big volcano must have erupted underwater, and all the pumice just floated up.
Lots of commercial applications, like lava soap, abrasives, hydroponic medium, aquarium fill.
Like Dremel grinding stones ? oxy stones for fish tanks ?
Would be nice if some of that some has Gold, Copper, or other precious metals mixed in with the lava rock.
Well, we finally have the answer to what happened to Amelia Aerhart. A simialr eruption occured beofre her flight, and when they were lost and almost out of gas, they looked down, saw thus stuff thought it was land, and tried to land on it...oopsie..

I’m not sure about the dremel bit, it’s a light abrasive, so it’s used in stuff like polishes, toothpaste, facial scrubs, nail files, etc.
For aquariums, they are not used like oxy stones, but as landscaping (aquascaping?). They’ve got to be treated first to remove the oxygen pockets, so they don’t float, but they are lightweight and very porous, so they don’t put pressure on the tank and they can host lots of bacteria.
