The POTUS had a 'Flying Turtle' once.

OCEANSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Authorities are looking for suspects in an animal abuse case involving a turtle that was duct-taped to helium balloons.
A resident was outraged by what he saw and videotaped the turtle as it was swinging it arms up in the air.
Soon after, the balloons got caught in some trees and firefighters were able to rescue the reptile.
“I bet it was terrified, dangling back and forth because the wind was pushing it side to side,” said Joel Rabago, who saw the turtle.
“It’s animal abuse. I mean, if you didn’t want the turtle give it away, take it to a pet store. There’s lots of agencies for turtles,” Chanelle Wright said.
Authorities say the person responsible could face animal cruelty charges.

Thanks for making me spit my beer all over the curtains. The animal rights whackos should be very happy over this. The first turtle free flight should be commemorated on a postal stamp!

And that is exactly why my parents would cut off their own legs before letting a can of helium in our home in the sixties. A turtle would have been a good start if my brothers and I got ahold of it.
In the early days of the space program all sorts of critters were sent up, including chimpanzees, and a dog. The chimps, we are assured made it back. Not so the dog (USSR). This was a much shorter flight...

I know it was cruel, but I can just see in my mind a very curious 9-year old doing an “experiment” without thinking of the consequences to the turtle. He may not have even believed the balloon could cary the turtle’s weight.
As someone else mentioned, no one put a fire cracker in its shell or anything; this was non-malicious intent, if you ask me.
“As God is my witness, I thought that Turtles could fly.”
Sounds like something an overly-curious eight year old boy might to.
For sure the kid deserves a talking to. Not 18 months in solitary at Folsom.

It is sheer insanity to treat the dumb things kids do like capital crimes against the state. That is true abuse perpetrated by highly neurotic adults.
LOL!!! That is too funny. I used to do model rocketry all the time. My sister and I would stick little fisher-price people in the payload. I’m pretty sure a few grasshoppers took the expedition, too. And all of this was under my father’s watchful and exuberant eye. (He only had daughters—so the fact we liked rocketry was one of the only things that saved him from all of the barbie dolls lying around.) We asked my dad to put all kinds of wacky things in the payload, most of which he refused because of simple physics.
Putting a turtle on a ballon is pretty mild compared to lizards in a payload, if you think about the turbulence of it.
But it’s pretty clear that Disney-Pixar is a guilty party in this animal cruelty case. Where do you think they got the idea for ballons????? “Up” will be a banned movie soon.
I learn something every day.

or to anyone—this was probably a kid who wanted to give the turtle a ride and had leftover birthday balloons—so while stupid not necessarily malicious—
