Right now, the bottom line to the death penalty is the US senate judiciary committee. Chuck Grassley is the ranking Republican on the committee and is in line to become the next chairman.

Depending on the composition of the committee, the senate in concert with the house, whose chairman is Lamar Smith, congress could really toughen the rules for appeals of the death penalty.

If they wanted to, they could effectively if indirectly limit appeals to less than five years after conviction. They could also limit the ability of federal judges to overturn convictions instead of returning them to the trial court for reconsideration.

Importantly, they could entirely remove the death penalty *process* from the federal courts, so that judges couldn’t nit pick over how states execute murderers. Lethal injection, electrocution, the gas chamber, hanging or firing squad should all be fair game, if that’s how states wanted to execute. And the assumption should be that states are expert enough to do it.

Judges could be compelled to consolidate appeals, to limit appellate delays, and importantly, to put death penalty appeals at the head of the docket for consideration, that they “bump” other cases to be heard first.

If this was done, a lot of states would soon save millions of dollars of expense in keeping vicious murderers alive for decades.

No. That would be wrong.

Garrote them, instead.

Too bad these slugs can only be executed once. Remember this case and the Christian/Newsom case in Knoxville the next time some druggie tells you his or hers is a victimless crime.

Bad idea. Don’t want anybody staining their souls that way.

Wood chippers on the other hand...
