I grew up in So Cal in the early sixties and remember when surf music was everywhere. I still love it!

Classic: Eagles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Dylan, Joan Baez (can’t stand her politics, like her music). Modern: Trop rock (Buffett and his style), story-teller in Jim Croce/Harry Chapin style (Hugo Duarte, Rob Mehl, Jim Hoehn, Don Middlebrook). Also just about any version of Amazing Grace.

I'm a big "prog-rock" fan, but I'll listen to just about anything, except "rap" and Western, if it's too twangy.

Something I just picked up the other day is "Squackett," "Life Within a Day." It's a collaboration between Chris Squire of Yes, and Steve Hackett, formerly of Genesis. It's quite interesting. You can find some videos on Youtube.

But my absolute favorites are Yes, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, and Rush.

As a female geetar player (see my profile) I tend to like more acoustic, female related stuff such as Gillian Welch, Bonnie Raitt, Alison Krauss, shawn Colvin, Indigo Girls, etc. Grew up listening to The Kingston Trio (LOVE them), Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Diamond (my mom is a HUGE fan of Neil...been to a number of concerts with her). We were at a Neil concert once, it was all quiet and dark onstage. All of a sudden Neil sings ‘love on the rocks’ and my Mom blurts out ‘is hard on the knees’. Hubby and I BURST out laughing! Couldn’t stop, and the people around us were giving us dirty looks! Too funny.

Well.. since I grew up in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s.. sure, I still like The Beatles, I think Karen Carpenter is one of the finest vocalists of the ‘70’s.. I also like Steely Dan..especially “AJA”, then, of course; there’s Chuck Mangione..wonderfully terrific music.

But, in my opinion, Frank Sinatra is the best..he is absolutely the finest interpreter of the Great American Songbook, excepting Ella, of course..

I’ve also been listening to Classical music for a long time as well..I’m particularily fond of Vanessa Mae, she’s not well known here in America, but she’s a superstar in Europe and Asia. She plays a mean Electric Violin..her music style has been called Techno-Classical..if you’ve never heard of her, you’re in for a treat.. this peice is titled “Bach Street Prelude”..it’s actually a Bach Partitia..but don’t tell nobody..and turn it UP. http://youtu.be/s8f2KYcd6VM

Then..I love Old Hymns..there is a relatively new Christian group, called INDELIBLE GRACE, that takes older hymn texts, sometimes over 200-300 years old, and marries these texts to new music..the result is wonderful..INDELIBLE GRACE recorded a live album a few years ago, titled, “THE HYMN SING”.. here’s one of the tracks from that live album.(the concert was video taped at the Ryman in Nashville) = http://youtu.be/cnjkGH4kk-A

Enjoy the music !

Self taught six string player and I also have a Lawsuit Martin 12 string LOL. I learned by listening to Willie Nelson's Troublemaker album. I like Old Rock 50's-80's, Old Country classics, Folk, Bluegrass, and Gospel. My dad taught me songs like Foggy River, I'm going back to where I come from, and a lot of other ones as a kid.

I like The Beach Boys music better than The Beatles. Sloop John B I really liked. A lot of people didn't know that Carl Wilson could have done all the great vocal back ups Brian did just as well as Brian. The song Kokomo proved that much. I also think The Eagles had some great musicians like Leadon, Meisner, Walsh, Schmit, and Felder. Leadon though was amazing in his tallents. I don't think they would have gotten anywhere without him. With The Beatles George never got the credit he deserved as a musician. He and Ringo were the great musicans of that band.

I generally try to stay removed from an artist politics. For example I like Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Kris Kristofferson. But I also listen to Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon. Most underrated rock band? That's an easy one I'd pick The Traveling Wilburys. Harrison's friendships made that band a reality. Orbinson's death ended it way too soon.

The CD that I can't find in order to buy it that I've been seeking for several years? The Bellamy Brothers Featuring Let your love flow. I think it was their first hit. Some of their best work IMO is on that one. I have the vinyl of it though.

I like most types of what is considered Americana music......folk, c&w, bluegrass, along with some classic soul and indie rock.

Most of the classical mentioned above (for the last half-hour I've been listening to Handel's Concerti Grossi). More Bach than Beethoven and Mozart, but I have a lot of that, too. Handel's organ pieces, and, of course, his Messiah.

Also solo (or nearly solo) piano -- Ludovico Einaudi, Jennifer Haines, Phillip Wesley, etc., etc.

The Russians also did well with Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto (and I was enjoying Van Cliburn's great recordings of them for at least ten years, courtesy of my mother, before I read The Fountainhead...).

Can't get into Rachmaninoff's Liturgy, though -- I enjoy about five minutes of it at a sitting, then start looking for something else.

Cello -- Pablo Casals, Jacqueline Du Pre, even Wispelwey when I've had a couple of drinks...

"Modern" stuff, from the sixties -- Ian and Sylvia, We Five, early Jefferson Airplane, also Van Morrison.

Some "older" (a decade or four, or more) country -- Highway 101, Patsy Cline, Hank (Sr.), Ray Price, Tom T. Hall.

Bluegrass -- lots of it, old and new. My Alison Krauss and Union Station playlist is about five hours long, and I have a lot of the Rice brothers and really old Bluegrass.

Unclassifiable -- I have everything Townes Van Zandt recorded, and all the [original] Clandestine CDs (a Texas Celtic group). I love the Quebe Sisters, and Mrs. U and I drive quite a ways to hear them sometimes. Raul Malo is another contemporary favorite (really great live).

Gipsy Kings -- have all their CDs, and caught them live at Austin City Limits' new venue a while back.

20GB of music on my 32GB iPhone -- I'm always having to find something to do without for a few months to make room for new acquisitions...

I was looking through my music collection and the only thing the music has in common is strong melody lines. It might be due to me being partially tone-deaf. I’m afraid the finer nuances of music expression are lost on me.
