Good morning, FRiends and fellow gardeners! We finally have power again, some dog-gone big and vicious storms ran over us last night here in NE Louisiana. If anybody figures out how to get a solar system to work at night without spending $100k on batteries, please let me know!! lol
Received anywhere between 2.5" and 5" of rain, depending on the field. The 2.5" we registered here at the house can't possibly be right ... the rain was blowing so sideways that I don't think half of it got in the gauge. It was sorely needed and I am thankful for every drop. There are branches and limbs down all over the homestead. It is a mess and will take a day or two to clean up. All of the beehives came through fine. Those bees really glue everything together well with propolis.
We are going to start picking scarlet cowpeas tomorrow or Sunday. They are loaded and beautiful. Also preparing to plant (and try) a late summer crop of sweet corn. We have a few rows at the edge of a cotton field that didn't get planted for some reason, but the rows are devoid of grass and weeds, under a pivot, and the cotton will be kept pest-free, so that should help with the corn. With as much seed as we have, hard to go wrong with a try.
Got a couple of articles that might interest y'all: The first is something I came across about drought and tasty fruits/veggies. Rightly_dividing and I actually discussed this a couple of weeks ago. Here is the link:
US Produce May Pack More Punch
Here is a link to an article posted on FR yesterday about Scott's Miracle Gro donating to the Romney campaign. I realize that there are some members of our group that don't like Scott's, but our ping list is 532 people, not all of whom are 'anti'. So, for what it is worth:
Scotts Miracle-Gro goes out on a limb with political donation
My heart goes out to those of you that are still in the grips of the heat and drought. My husband and I know just how that is and how helpless and hopeless you can feel when the heat won't relent and the air takes your breath away when you go outdoors. It is my hope and prayer that you get a break in the weather very soon.
The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
I had a Frog choking down pour this past Wed. I bet we got over two inches of rain in an hour and a half. It rained so hard there was a river of water washing over our back porch. The porch is covered and at ground level. I will have to add more Fertilizer to my lone raised Bed tomato patch. I am sure what I added a week ago was leached out.
You know, I was just thinking about that when I typed it. I’ll have to pass your suggestion on to Hubby. He sets the traps.LOL.
Well, I wish we had your extra rain. LOL. It’s been tough and very unusual Missouri weather this year. If we had to survive on what we could grow this year, we would starve.
However, it is good in a way, because Hubby is finally interested in serious rainwater storage.LOL.
Good to hear from you. Saw your beer thread. Hubby is collecting all kinds of jugs to make wine, but so far, not enough grapes to do it.
Have a great weekend.
After successfully trapping Moles for 45 years I had to hire a pro to trap them for me last week. They would trip the traps but no catch-um. He got 2 the first day and no more Mole Hills. Our veggies and flowers are doing great in spite of very little sunshine...
So what’s the story? Were the moles smarter? Traps damaged maybe? Did the pro use traps that were different than yours?
Of course the Moles were smarter... so he used a different type trap
Wow! Beautiful corn and pumpkin plants, tubebender!
Mrs Red Devil, Cashmere and I are headed back to Mississippi this Thurs. to check on our house and property and to try to move a few items from two storage units, we have been renting, into the now empty house. I say try because I developed some right hip pain during our move to Texas. It will limit how much and what I can do.
I bet Cashmere just runs nuts when she gets home. Mrs RD plans to have a yard sale of items we don’t need or want any more. I hope we sell it all! We will be without internet and TV for over a week. The yard sale might pay for our gas - or not!
I can’t believe every time we plan to travel the gas prices sky rocket!
Hate you left MS but I like TX too. Haven’t I see you on the Homebrew thread also?
I know this post has nothing to to do with your wonderful carrot mutation. But last Sunday I agreed to go with my wife to a dinner hosted by one of her sisters over in Shreveport, La. I had met this sister years ago and knew she was kind of strange. This sister had planed a Blind dinner party, which we were not informed about! The diners were supposed to put on Blind folds and eat the dinner and savor the taste!
This Red Devil Refused to comply with the rules!
I met two of her other four sisters at the dinner and the one she told me was a “little retarded” also refused to put on a blind fold. And she turned out to be the sanest of the bunch!
Gees, I never in my life thought what my wife has been telling me about her sister’s actions were true. I have met all her brothers (3) and they are normal individuals I wouldn’t mind to have as friends! The sisters I would never want to meet again, except for the one designated as “retarted”!
My wife is the youngest of this family of brothers and sisters and is quite conservative. She knows I wont go back for another dinner!
LOL... I can top that Red... I have nieces and nephews who are left of Nancy Pelosi
August 10, 2012 - last comment you made. Where are you? Hope all is well.
Pinging Gabz also. Perhaps you know? If no one knows, I have her mailing address and will send her a note.
