A book from the iconic series has been rushed into the chain's kids meals -- which prompted a curt response from the series' copyright holder.
Chick-fil-A has replaced its kids' meal prize, but has yet to sweep away the controversy.
The chain last week pulled the Jim Henson Company-produced finger puppets that were being placed in childrens' meals, officially citing safety concerns; the move, however, was largely viewed as retribution for the puppet and production studio's very public rebuke of the fast food chain's president, Dan Cathy, confirmation that his restaurant donated to religious organizations that fight against gay marriage.
Now, Chick-fil-A is rewarding young diners with a series of books from the Berenstain Bears series, a move that does not seem to please the group that owns the copyrights to the series.
Posted on the Berenstain Bears Co.'s official site is this message:
Our publisher, HarperCollins, is marketing several of their Berenstain Bears titles through a kids' meal promotion at Chick-Fil-A scheduled for August. This program was in development for over a year. We were unaware of any controversy involving Chick-Fil-A until July 25th.
The Berenstain family does not at this time have control over whether this program proceeds or not. We hope those concerned about this issue will direct their comments toward HarperCollins and Chick-Fil-A. Sincerely, The Berenstain Family.
Jan Berenstain, who with her husband Stanley created the series in 1962, passed away in February; Stanely died in 2005.
How about Chick-Fil-A teams up w/ The Gideons and puts a small Gideons New Testament in EVERY kid’s meal!
How could it have been retribution when they dropped the Henson toys before the controversy began?
Love it!!
Now it all makes sense!
Plan on going back Wednesday if we can get within two blocks of the place.
God Bless Chick-Fil-A!!!
It would be nice if the Benstein company would endorse Chick-Fil-A rather than having that wimpy message about the controversy.
Box of 50, 22 caliber LR ammo in every meal.
We are careening towards a secular police state. I don't think people appreciate just how close we are.
They always forget about the double-edged sword. I know I won’t be buying any muppet stuff as gifts for children ever again.
I wonder if the starter of this feces storm over a private individual’s opinion knew what was coming?
Our church is going Wednesday night,,,
Our pastor warned it may be crowded and if so to take our food to the park down the street...
:)
The company, like any other media/publishing company, is probably run by hipster Obama-bot leftists, regardless of what the content of the books is.
You can bet for sure that HarperCollins, a publishing company in New York, is run by left-wingers. The former CEO was a big time Obama supporter, and the guy who took over was her “protege”.
So don’t expect a heroic stand from any of these companies.
This whole thing is ridiculous.
Its ridiculous that gay supporters cannot respect the views of others when they expect everyone else to respect their views.
Mr. Cathy and Chickfila do not say they are anti-gay as the media insists.
They simply support traditional values.
Dan Cathy was giving an honest answer to a question that he was asked about his personal beliefs; that Chick-fil-A supports traditional marriage.
He further stated that they treat every person with honor, dignity and respect regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender-
and he stated that their intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena.
This Company has the same right to BE AGAINST gay marriage, as those who SUPPORT IT. The First Amendment of the Constitution overrides what gay marriage supporters may think or believe.
Those who champion the gay cause are just using this as a way to advance their agenda.
No such thing as a private individual’s opinion any more - the culture war just got kicked up a few hundred notches.
The comments came on 7/24. The puppets were recalled on 7/19. How could CFA then be enacting retribution for something that had not happened yet?
