The Aurora, Colo., theater massacre spurred fearful consumers out west to arm themselves yesterday, with some gun shop owners reporting a massive spike in business.
The phones been ringing off the hook today, said Robert Parker, owner of Parker Arms & Gunsmithing, 17 miles from the site of the rampage. Anytime something like this happens, people are more apt to think more about wanting to protect themselves. All of those people there were just helpless.
One hour north of Aurora at Rocky Mountain Shooter Supply, gun sales were up by about 50 percent, manager Bill Cates said.
Theyre just tired of being victims, he said, adding that more women than usual were purchasing guns. They just want to be able to protect themselves if theyre in a situation like that.
Aurora was ground zero for a nationwide run on ammunition in 2009, following fears that the Obama administration would hike taxes on bullets or tighten gun laws, according to a CNN profile at the time.
But Thomas Nolan, a former Boston police officer and former associate professor of criminal justice at Boston University, said the route to safety lies in tighter control of guns.
Many people would agree, this kind of violence doesnt take place in other parts of the world as it does in the United States, because the weapons arent available, he said.

My husband carries here in CO. We are actually in Aurora. He said the most a business can do is ask you to leave if someone notices it.
Probably because all other shooters were out buying more weapons.
Heh-heh!
I would think so, too. Just imagine the chaos which took place in that theater when this began to happen..No security was around to stop it. However, if many people had been there who were armed, this probably would not have happened in the first place and if it had, the injury and death would have been much less. I would rather have a neighbor nearby who is armed in such a situation than to know I have a policeman far away.
Are Syrians allowed to carry, own or posses? Cause thank god theres no violence over there.
If two or three people who went to that movie had been carrying, it would never had been as bad as it was.
Actually, the place was swarming with cops.
Early reports say there were many cops on the scene for crowd control and security due to popularity of the movie.
How right you are. I work with Europeans, and of course the usual refrain on how the US is so violent. Just had to bring up the last two World Wars, and @ the millions that died due to “gun violence”. That shut em up.
Better get your guns now.
The Left will spin the Colorado Massacre as a justification for the UN Small Arms Treaty and will begin confiscating weapons as soon as they can.
Good Point. That is a big political play for the teleprompter reader.
I bet a lot of people are also equipping with tactical lights as well.
They have some very good green lasers and hi output LED lights now.
Would the shooter have ducked and ran if he was painted with a green laser? Would the evil aircraft death ray green laser pointer been powerful enough to have blinded him in a dark theater?
One couild speculate forever.
I have not heard anyone suggesting this though.
Bump for later reading.
The Obama Administration has been waiting for something like this to happen. It was as if the anti-gun speeches were already prepared yesterday. Rendell attacked DBMs. Maloney went after "assault rifles." Obi will sign the United Nations gun ban treaty, as promulgated by Iran (a member of the Board which drafted the Treaty).
My advice to anyone who was considering buying on of those Saiga Shotguns with DBM? Do so immediately! Also, any of the generic versions of the AR-15. Look for Demwits to move against ownership of same immediately. It is what they do. What they've been waiting for...
Post 34-Last paragraph-’on’ should read ONE.
I figure Holmes knew no one in the theater would be armed, or he wouldn’t have chosen it. The no firearms policy made the victims easy targets.
No, I read their law. Private owners can ban ccw on their own property. Even rocky men gun owners mentions such an example and says as much, the law says itself that the rights of private property owners and businesses are not changed for them to have to allow ccw on their property if they don’t want it.
“Probably because all other shooters were out buying more weapons.”
The range is a gun store too. Empty.
Which range, if I may ask?
We go to Silver Bullet on 38th.
