Several interesting stories today.

Rep. Andrew J. May (Dem. KY), chairman of the House Military Affairs Committee making a fool of himself predicting a quick end to the war.

May would go to prison after the war for accepting bribes from military contractors. He was pardoned by the equally corrupt Harry Truman in 1952.

July 10, 1942:

"A German-Jewish girl wearing the Yellow Star and a numbered tag around her neck was photographed just prior to her deportation.
The tag bears her name, date of birth, and convoy number, which indicates that she was deported to the Theresienstadt camp/ghetto in Czechoslovakia. Deportation of German Jews to Theresienstadt commenced in June 1942 and continued throughout the year.
By December 33,554 German Jews had been deported to the "model ghetto," located near Prague."

The US Grant/Lees were a god send for the British 8th Army. Despite being stop gap designs they packed a 75 mm gun while most British built tanks still had the small 2 pounder. Besides better anti-tank penetration the 75 MM could fire a HE round to knock out Rommel’s 88 MM position something the 2 pounder could not do.
