MicrosoftMicrosoft just demonstrated a feature of Windows 8 called Windows To Go that lets you store Windows 8 on a USB drive and use it on other PCs.
Windows To Go puts all your apps, settings, etc. on your USB stick. From there, you pop it into another PC and a full version of Windows 8 is up and running. It even works on machines running older versions of Windows.
Essentially, it's the entire operating system stored on a USB drive. Very cool.

Linux is a Johnny-come-lately to this as well. I've been moving system images between AIX servers since before Linux, and before optical media. Write the image to a 4MM or 8MM tape and boot it up. Was doing it even earlier than that but can't remember the tape formats for the life of me. Knowing IBM, that capability has been around a loong time.
I like and use Linux but they are also-rans in this particular discussion.

Yeah, I have my Win7 and Mint Maya installed on an SSD, trying to figure out how to get the Win7 installed to my current HDD (1 terra) on VirtualBox (already have Win7, but I want the installation I already have)..and installing Linux on an SDD drive is no easy task. Speaking of that, I have 3 250gig HDDs that are striped that can only be read for windows (about 85% full).. :/ Not getting rid of the info until I can transfer to Linux, reformat and read the striped, and transfer back. The problem is that it is a pain to read from the striped using Linux..
I actually have more HHDs that I can throw in my case.. just not enough room or cables to do it with ;)
(BTW, sorry I ended up babbling about everything and nothing this morning.. was really tired and should have known better to try to type anything >.<)

The only thing keeping me from totally getting rid of my Windows partition now is the fact I can’t get World of Warcraft running on Linux yet. There are a couple of friends online (in WoW) that say they are running it fine.. but I cannot get past errors (running it with WINE, WINETricks and POL(Play on Linux))... :/ As soon as I can do that, Windows is gone. WoW is not even that important to me (pretty burned out on it).. BUT, I have made several good friends (all within my age group) on there and keep in contact with them. (3 in Canada and 1 is in New Zealand.. of South African Decent with lots of VISA/political issues :p).. I am a guild leader, so it is not easy to just up and leave WoW.. just a game, but I have to keep up my responsibilities (I didn’t even want to be Guild Leader, but was voted to be GL after the original GL up and left the game without telling anyone :/). The friends and I have known and been playing on WoW for a few years together and that is why I feel obligated..
Sorry for changing topics, but I thought it important to say why I still need Windows (ATM).. :p

Good for emergency boot.. I have both Win7 and Linux on flah drive (I think they are called ‘Thumbnail drives’ now).. very handy ;)

Lol.. that looks similar to an app that I ran (minus the kanji) on DOS that gave ‘windows’.. btw, To those that said that DOS is not capable of multitasking... I was able to make a script back the that was able to run music in the background while doing other things (in my case, playing a game :D) ... It WAS TSR, but it was also running in the background.. that was multitasking.. no?
Agreed. I work with some AIX folk here in the office and am starting to realize some of its capabilities. I understand that it and probably several other *nixes have had this ability for some time.
That's the reason that Linux has had it for a while as well. Linux' goal has always been to be POSIX compliant and that ability is one of the fortunate side effects. :)

Ah, wel if we're going that route... HP-3000 minicomputers running MPE-V would do the same thing on 300BPI tape reels. I really liked the way that a full backup was essentially all you needed to get a system back up and running. Mount the tape, boot, and load your system and go. Took a while, but at least you didn't have to jump through hoops to get things back where you were. Unfortunately, this was the only way to fix really bad disk fragmentation.
Bet it didn't work too well after the magic smoke got out.
