For smokers who bargained on roll-your-own cigarette stores for cheap smokes, it looks like those days are numbered.
On Friday, President Barack Obama is expected to sign into law a federal highway bill with a section that redefines tobacco manufacturers to include any business with a roll-your-own cigarette machine and taxes those products at the same rate as packaged smokes.
The move comes a month after Illinois increased taxes on such roll-your-own machine-made cigarettes.
Marcia Smith, 47, of Lake County, decided after the state tax increase that she should move her Smokes & Such tobacco shops in Skokie and Gurnee to Wisconsin, where taxes on rolled cigarettes are lower.
If Obama signs the law, she said shell shut her doors.
The machines, which cost about $33,000 each, allow customers to pick their own tobacco and pour it into a device that can roll the tobacco into a carton, or about 200 cigarettes, within minutes.
Tobacco is an easy to grow .... urh ornamental plant....
for.... you know... shrub value...
Time to go underground black market transactions and bartering avoiding taxes altogether. Starve the beast!
Taxes were NOT raised on ‘pipe tobacco’.
RYO and MYO cigs will cost the same as before- about 1/6 the price of pre-made in my experience.
It’s a shame these people will be put out of business.
I’m glad my smoke shop didn’t take the risk of buying one of these machines.
The enforcement arm of Obamacare strikes again.
Unfortunately knew their days were numbered
Very easy and quick to make your own (and those days are numbered too - counting on more days for that numbering.)
Might as well smoke home-grown pot, which is cheaper, and doesn’t provide financial gain to corrupt thugs. You know, the ones we voted for.:)
While it sounds nice to blame the current resident and congress, this $#!t has been going on for decades, centuries even.
The only way to stop it is to amend the Constitution that forbids the practice. No more riders.
I had too much time on my hands one night and I calculated how many packs of smokes would fit in a semi-truck van.
Van; 576” long (48’), 110” high (inside), 102” wide (prolly 98” inside width). Over 6 million cubic inches and an ave. pack of smokes is 5.85 ci.
One of these vans would hold about a million packs.
Lots of maoney rolling down the highway.

Levon Helm-—— Growing Trade....RIP Levon
Althgough NY State has been trying to cut in on them too.
I’m old enough to remmeber the old Laredo home cigarette rolling machine and tobacco. I see they still sell them on ebay along with more modern equivalents - http://www.ebay.com/sch/sis.html?_nkw=VINTAGE+filter+cigarette+maker+Laredo+tobacco+roller
Try to turn a profit in America, I dare you!
First, they came for the smokers, and I said nothing...
“The only way to stop it is to amend the Constitution that forbids the practice.”
The problem in a democracy is you get a majority that thinks something is the right thing to do or they just want to do it, the minority is constantly getting screwed. They shouldn’t ban something unless it’s an unlabeled poison.
Yes, amend the constitution, if possible!
All of them have been dicking with us for Decades.
Obama is the worst, but he wont win, he is just pissing folks off.
FUBO! FUMO!
And for all you folks that think taxing smokers is cool....
Stand Bye.
