Country music superstar and American Idol, Carrie Underwood has come out in support of gay marriage in a new interview with England's The Independent, citing her marriage, to hockey player Mike Fisher, and Christian faith for her conviction.
"As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry," she said, a surprising comment from a star whose fan base lies so squarely in the conservative heart of the country. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."
Underwood, who described her church as gay-friendly, said that "above all, God wanted us to love others. It's not about setting rules, or [saying] 'everyone has to be like me'. No. We're all different. That's what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other."
Feedback from her fans and conservatives alike has thus far been uniformly positive, with the group GOProud heralding the star for her support.
"The more Americans think about how issues affect their gay friends and family the more they come to realize that supporting same-sex civil marriage is the right thing to do," said the right-wing group's cofounder Jimmy LaSalvia in a statement to the LA Times. "More and more people are coming to that conclusion -- and that includes conservative Christians.
Underwood's interview comes at a time in which many prominent figures have spoken out in favor of the issue, including President Barack Obama and rapper Jay-Z.
The country star's new album, "Blown Away," debuted atop the Billboard 200 after its May 19 release and her latest single, "Good Girl," has ascended to the top of the Country Singles chart, her 12th No. 1.
Touchy feeling faux christinese. Jesus discriminated, shame on these “preachers” that do not speak truth from the bible to their congregations.
However regarding church, I agree that most mainline aka liberal denominations now endorse a homosexual / lesbian agenda, and God will judge them for that. There are however, fundamental, conservative, Bible-believing, King James only churches that do preach the whole counsel of God, and take a firm stand against abortion or homo/lesbian behavior. God loves the sinner (John 3:16), but hates the sin (Romans 1:18-32, 3:23, 6:23). I would recommend you find & attend a Bible believing, preaching, fundamental ocnservative Baptist church. IMO.
I was very disappointed to learn just this moment that Carrie Underwood supports gay marriage, heartbroken about it, have not been able to learn what she thinks of abortion though
These phony Churches that support these things...its terrible, even Joel Osteen is just as bad
I don’t watch NBC ABC CBS other than the occasional sports, I had the Sound of Music Live this Thursday night on NBC with Carrie Underwood set to tape, but now I have no desire to see it
heartbreaking
In the entertainment industry, To Get Along, You Go Along.
Gays control the industry, and if you want to stay in the business, you’d better toe the party line.
She’s more cross-over than country.
There is no joy or relief or satisfaction to be found in looking to celebrities or politicians for firm pro-traditional marriage convictions on this issue.
Lyrically it’s a bad decision:
“And she don’t know...
That I dug my key into the side
of her pretty little Mini-Cooper
carved my name into her leather seats...
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights,
slashed a hole in all 4 tires...
Maybe next time she’ll think before he cheats.”
