A Colorado woman was cited for a seat belt violation when the police officer who pulled her over during a routine traffic stop discovered she had removed her child from a car seat to make room for a gas can.

The unidentified female driver was stopped after making an improper turn in Aurora, Colo., on May 30. The woman and her two children—a 14-year-old and the toddler—were not wearing seat belts. But a photo of the back seat taken by the officer for the Aurora Police Department's "Click It or Ticket" campaign shows the gas can was secured with the seat belt meant for the young child.

BULLSQUIRT! This “Click It Or Ticket” as a primary offense garbage has got to stop.

This is natural selection, folks. If that woman wants to kill her child to save a gas can, that’s on her. Why we’re allowing law enforcement to pull over people for not wearing a seatbelt while states like mine (Florida) allow motorcyclists to ride without helmets is absolutely asinine!

The child doesn’t seem to be dressed in anything but drawers, either.

With all due respect, I think you can make a decent case Mom made the right call. In a collision, an unsecured gas can flying around inside the car might well put a child at greater risk than the same child unsecured in the back seat.

Any State powerful enough to force 300 million people to wear seatbelts is powerful enough to round up dissidents and put them in re-education camps.

Any human willing to pin on a badge and oppress his neighbors in return for a pay check deserves nothing but scorn.

Politicians who pass dumb ass laws so fearful government educated types will vote to reelect them deserve scorn.

Idiots who think the government can keep them safe deserve scorn.

Your momma can’t guarantee safety on this earth.
Bloomburg can’t guarantee safety on this earth.
Jesus himself will not guarantee safety on this earth.

So we can live in a screwed up cesspool with a bunch of laws and endless regulation. Or. We can live in a cesspool without a bunch of laws and endless regulation.

I choose the cesspool without a bunch of laws and regulations.

Absolutely agree. Same here in Ohio. No bodily protection whatsoever for bicyclist of any kind, but people in cars, where they're much safer, have head restraints, belts, air bags, and other "Ralph Nader" imposed crap all over the car.

What it amounts to is a TAX imposed on car drivers, since there're more of us.

I wear seatbelts, and have been using them since 1968. Anyone in my car has to have theirs on before I'll accelerate. But, to have the state or feds consider me a criminal if I don't wear one is disgusting.

Since motorcycle riders have absolutely NO PROTECTION FROM ANYTHING while they're riding, the government should not impose any restrictions on people in cars, for any reason at all. Keep the hell out of my car.

And to have the feds get involved in any of this since there's nothing in the Constitution about seatbelts, shoulder restraints, head restraints, or airbags makes me sick to my stomach.

The commercial they have out is disgraceful as well. They have one guy feigning to put on his belt as he drives past a patrol. Another guy fumbles a drive-thru sandwich. The commercial ends saying, “Cops are trained to know when you aren’t wearing one.”

Whose money paid for that training? They’re being trained to notice when someone isn’t wear a belt, but they have to perform sting operations and road blocks to catch people driving under the influence? Disgraceful!

I’ve been wearing my seat belt since I started driving. I owned a 1969 Mercury that didn’t have a shoulder belt but still wore the lap belt. You can’t drive a newer car without some idiot light blinking or an audible alarm screeching that you’re not wearing your belt. You’d think that’d be enough, but now they have to make it a primary offense. Unreal.

Not supporting what she did, but during the summer, back after I learned to walk, and before I learned to read..... It was heroic to get me to wear any kind of clothing. Heck, I'm not too big on clothing today during the summer months. I do try to cover the fiddly bits, mostly.

Maybe it’s me, but this seems to be blown way out of proportion and it’s difficult to believe this is considered a news story.

Good point. And it appears that this is some sort of hatchback, in which case putting the can in the trunk wouldn’t solve the problem.

Look, folks, gas is expensive these days. She wanted to make sure it was safe.

The naked little kid don’t seem to care. He probably hates his car seat anyway.

The other thing wrong with this picture is the “green” gas can. This is a federally mandated gas can that does not work. Mandated by ivy league metro-sexuals who have never actually touched a gas can. Won’t touch em because they are smelly. Dirty. They have people for that.

So we have a federally mandated gas can, strapped to a federally mandated safety seat. Picture taken by a federal grant sucking local cop.

We have a huge class of people suckling the public tit.

Cops need to get real jobs that prodeuce something of value. Shame on these great hulking sullen union thugs suckling on the productive members of society.

Check the statutes in your local area. MOST States allow seat belt violations as a primary offense. I read the article and noted that, but most people are sensitive to this, esp. with a nationwide ad campaign ongoing by the NHTSA. Those are YOUR tax dollars.

“improper left turn” is a classic ploy used by Police Departments everywhere to initiate probable cause. Please. Do you think we are children here?
