‘We were being hazed, but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world’ Students speak out on frat charges

Two of the Boston University students police found stripped, bound and covered in condiments inside an Allston basement are railing against the hazing allegations leveled at their Alpha Epsilon Pi frat brothers, saying the incident was blown out of proportion and that key parts of the cops’ report never even happened.

“The police report was really exaggerated,” said one victim, whose identity is being withheld by the Herald. “We were being hazed, but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world. None of us had fearful looks in our eyes, none of us were crying. They (the cops) asked us if we were OK, and we said, ‘We’re fine.’ ”

Jake Wark, spokesman for the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office, said: “The evidence at the scene speaks for itself. These young men were stripped, bound and left freezing in a basement.”

Wark declined to say whether any of the five hazed students would be testifying against their frat brothers, citing the district attorney’s policy of not discussing trial strategy.

Three of the 10 students charged in the alleged April 9 incident appeared yesterday in Brighton District Court, where a judge granted prosecutors’ request to continue their arraignments until June 27 because officials are still investigating. Jonathan Katz, 22; Kyle Shevrin, 21; and Alexander Nisenzon, 21, each face five counts of failing to report hazing.

One defendant, 21-year-old Michael Sanieoff, was arraigned on a single count of keeping a disorderly house and was released after his May 18 arraignment, while six other students had their cases continued to an undetermined date. They face a variety of charges, including hazing, failing to report it, and assault and battery.

Four others had charges against them dropped after a May 7 clerk’s hearing, where four of the five alleged victims appeared — but refused to testify.

Boston police said they responded to an off-campus Ashford Street home, where they found five students in the basement, in only their underwear and bound at their wrists by duct tape, covered in “humiliating condiments” including honey, hot sauce and coffee grinds, and with parts of their heads shaved.

“All five were shivering and had horrified and fearful looks on their faces,” police said in their report, adding one alleged victim had “tears coming down his face.” Police said the students also had “red welts” all over their backs.

“That’s not true,” said a second alleged victim, explaining the hot sauce may have caused the marks. “We weren’t beaten. We woke up the next morning and our skin was normal.”

Both alleged victims said they remain good friends with their frat brothers, and lamented the national fraternity’s decision to shut down their chapter. One said they as a frat were being “made an example of.”

“I think pledging for a fraternity is the best decision I’ve made in college,” the first alleged victim said.

"Nice touch" indeed.

This is one of several all black fraternities. They all pretty much get away with things no other fraternity could do without being thrown off campus.

Like branding, for instance.

If Elizabeth Warren can be an Indian, then I guess these BU students could be black...

So I guess the crime rate in Boston must be pretty low these days to be wasting so much time on this....I’ll admit these hazing things can get out of hand sometimes, but this sounds pretty lame to me.

.....I’d say they gave the “coppers” some crazy names if this is a “black frat”. /s

That is an atrocity!

Sounds like some feelgoodist cop embellished the report.

No one I ever knew who belonged to a fraternity called it a “frat.”

When I got “hazed” back in the early 80’s, they use to call it “initiated” into my fraternity (which was the Animal House on the block), it was just silly mindless rituals and stupid wastes of time planned to get through the 24 hour period. It was all intended to make one exhausted, give up and think you’re never gonna make it in and then elation when you do make it in, followed by feeling dumb because you were gonna make it in regardless of all the happy horseshit.

Doesn’t seem like the “victims” are going to be testifying....

They seem pretty happy with the whole thing move on...
