Florida ordinance could give ‘transgender’ men access to women’s restrooms

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, May 21, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – A proposed “civil rights” ordinance could open public restrooms and showers to transgender members of the opposite sex, its critics warn.

The city council of Jacksonville, Florida, is considering passing an ordinance to outlaw “discrimination” on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, public accommodations, or housing. That means no employer, landlord, or owner of any facility open to the public may refuse to hire or rent their property to anyone who claims to be homosexual or transgender.

The measure, supported by Councilman Warren Jones, also leaves employers vulnerable to lawsuits if an applicant claims he is a victim of discrimination.

“This ‘civil rights’ ordinance takes away more rights than it supposedly grants,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, a pro-family legal organization.

Such a measure would “further infringe on the religious freedoms of Christians, and the majority of mainstream Americans who do not accept such alternative lifestyles as normal,” Joey Vaughn, a local business owner, told the Florida Baptist Witness. “There is no exemption or protection under the ordinance for followers of Jesus Christ who own or work in a business.”

The Jacksonville Baptist Association has been active in opposing the measure. However, members of the Religious Left have supported it, including two churches affiliated with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, as well as clergy of the Episcopalian, Lutheran, and Jewish faiths.

The measure follows shortly after a similar motion passed the city council of Hutchinson, Kansas. The final measure, passed city council by a 3-2 vote last week, removed the transgender provision. However, it still opens public accommodations – including any church that rents its facility to the public – to homosexuals. A fact sheet on the ordinance states, “If a church has a parish hall that they rent out to the general public, they could not discriminate against a gay couple who want to rent the building for a party.” The council will vote on the specific legal language on June 5.

Adding transgender rights could facilitate another kind of abuse. Campaign Life Coalition national president Jim Hughes has warned that such laws give sexual predators “legitimized access” to women’s restrooms.

“Wherever this [provision] is passed, privacy and decency are eroded,” agrees Staver.

Canadian women have suffered a flurry of restroom attacks by men. In 2010, an Ottawa man was sentenced to three years in prison for assaulting a 15-year-old girl at Nepean High School. The year before, a Halifax woman was assaulted with a sharp object in a restroom at the mall.

In the United States, Concerned Women for America’s Donna Miller was shocked to see a man urinating in a women’s restroom in plain view, “very intentional, in your face” in 2009.

Yet a Macy’s store in San Antonio, Texas, fired 27-year-old Natalie Johnson for denying a man who identified himself as transgender access to the women’s restroom.

Staver cited a case in Orono, Maine, where a teenage boy uses the female restroom on the grounds of his perceived gender identity.

Citing the inherent controversy, Jacksonville City Councilman Doyle Carter believes the motion should be settled by a public referendum. “I just think it’s an important issue and the citizens of the city should vote on it, not 19 people,” he said. The former mayor, John Delaney, who supports the ordinance, disagrees. “It’s not a democracy were everyone votes on everything, like ancient Greece,” he said.

“This has never been about discrimination,” Staver said. “These ordinances are meant to legitimize and codify the homosexual and transgender lifestyles.”

Public comments will be accepted at the council’s next meeting on May 22. The body could vote on the issue by June 12.

I’m going to say I’m a man trapped in a woman’s body so I can gawk at the good-looking men in the bathroom/shower.

Uh, Chabad of Jacksonville and 2 other Orthodox Jewish chapters are AGAINST it (and their membership is FAR larger than the liberal "Jews" who support it), but the media won't bother with little facts in their determination to make this a "Retrograde Baptists vs. Everyone Else" narrative.

I caught a short segment of Miller Time on BOR last week (my wife watches that guy - not me).

He said something to the effect that progessive NAG’s are going to all be in favor of this until they find themselves sitting in a stall next to some guy who’s producing a real “growler” one morning...

How will they ever know who is transgender and who is a pervert trying to get a peek at women? Will there be bathroom guards? Will transgender carry cards to verify their status? This is getting beyond idiotic.

And, it having passed— what will happen when the first “cross dressing” “female/actual male” rapist enters the women’s room and commits rape or worse?

Since the access is guaranteed under the law... what will be the proof required to show someone is “transgendered” and not a psycho (which could be the same thing.. anyway).

Quite right.

The only way this can end is by reductio ad absurdum - take this b.s to its [il]logical conclusion. When people are forced to share bathrooms with LGBTQ freaks the consequences of their feel-good voting will be brought home to them.

Incidentally, this is why I'm so strongly opposed to homosexuals in the military. Servicemen and women don't get to choose their bathroom arrangements. It's one [wrong] thing to condemn criminals to be harassed in the showers, quite another to inflict it upon people volunteering to serve their country.

Who knows? One of these days we might even get an LGBTQ commander in chief.

I’m a lesbian trapped in the body of a middle aged man. Which way to the giurl’s shower?

Me too, which way to the cheerleader's showers?

It will never happen. No one would elect some dude who throws a baseball like a sissy, wears momjeans and has only a composite girlfriend.

What's going to happen is that companies will be forced to replace each pair of Men's and Lady's rooms with a collection of individual unisex toilets.

That will be the only way to satisfy the freaks and the women that will otherwise be freaked out.

Just another cost that will be passed onto business and then onto the consumer.

women’s restrooms - - -

Didn’t Colorado do this some years ago?

But when I was there visiting relatives about 3 years ago, I had forgotten about it.
And it ever happened when I was in public places.

A word of warning: you do NOT want to claim you are a lesbian in a man’s body. I once worked with a gay guy and I mentioned to him that that was one of my dad’s favorite jokes. The guy looked at me puzzled, saying he was confused and was I sure it was a joke? I explained that my dad meant that he was attracted to women. Gay dude explained that orientation and gender are separate things and that saying you’re a lesbian in a guy’s body means that you believe you are woman. You genuinely believe that you a woman who happens to be a lesbian. He said that kind of thing is no joke and there are people who actually think this. Say that to a gay person and they will take you literally.

I promptly informed my dad. He hasn’t made that joke since. No reason to get some sicko out there interested in you.
Straight people will get the humor but watch out for the freaks and the freaks who believe them. I know you’re joking, you know you’re joking...
Just never say that outside of FR and you should be safe.

Still, it figures that the homos would ruin our fun at their expense.

It has been my experience that there are a lot of jokes best kept to Free Republic! We are the only ones who get it and if one must explain the joke it loses the punchline.

What if your sexual identity is “voyeur”, why do only homosexual and crossdressing fetishists get their sexual needs met?

We already know that homosexuals solicit sex from strangers in bathrooms.

Bi-sexuals would be permitted access to solicit sex in the ladies rooms if this becomes law.

While there are currently laws on the books prohibiting sex in bathrooms and other public areas, they are selectively enforced against homosexuals and the national gay rights lobby is seeking to have them ended altogether.

Homosexuals have put up websites with information as to where the best bathrooms are for public sex (including certain courthouses).

Their identity revolves around random hookups.
