Michelle Obama prepared divorce papers to separate from Barack Obama in 2000 following his disastrous attempt to win a House seat in Chicago, according to a new book.
When he lost miserably the future First Lady was supposedly disgusted that her husband had ignored her warnings not to take on the four term incumbent Bobby Rush.
Their marriage - in its eighth year at the time - was on the rocks with Mr Obama so depressed some of his friends feared he was suicidal.
The claims mark the second time the Obamas have faced allegations they were on the verge of divorce after reports in 2010 suggested they were having difficulties.
The couple have admitted that in the past they did go through a rough patch but that they patched things up and grew closer together.
The Obamas have now been married for 21 years and have two children, Malia, 13, and Sasha, nine.
In The Amateur, Mr Kleins unauthorised account of Mr Obamas life and first term in office, he claims that Mr Obama was over ambitious in his attempt to take on House member Mr Rush for the black South Side seat in Chicago.
In a crushing blow, he lost by two votes to one prompting claims from Mr Rush that he was an educated fool.

Mooch had two affairs back in the day and their second daughter be the by product o’ one of those trysts.
Look at her: not a remnant of Jug Ears in her looks.
Heard it from..can’t remember..but I believe it.
“Nah, they both got a little action ... but not with each other. /s”
Oh, they found a couple of Frat brothers or something; one for her, one for him.
“Hussein aint the baby daddy oSasha.”

Twins born deaf, dumb and blind, no doubt ...?
Waaaay off base, IMHO. Wives and children are off limits in a civil society. If he’s having marital problems it really is none of our business, and it has no bearing on his fitness for office (he has none). If Dan Rather did a piece on the Romneys’ trial separation in 15 years ago (just to invent an example) everyone on the right would justifiably be incensed at the invasion of privacy and attempt to make political hay out of a long-forgotten problem time in the candidate’s marriage. Ronald Reagan was a divorcee when he was elected (the first, if I remember correctly)— but I don’t remember much being made of this in a partisan way. We should treat our opponents with the same respect we expect them to treat us. Even politicians are entitled to a private life, as exemplary or messy as it may be, so long as it doesn’t impact on their ability to do their jobs. Leave the gossip out of politics—we’ll win in the end on the issues, not on out National Enquiring the opposition.
Combined with his stench, no wonder the First Family more resembles The Adams Family.
No doubt Sarah Palin would agree.
When dealing with the commie rats trying to take over our country, taking the moral high ground is equivalent to BOHICA because the left will take that as weakness and attack.
Families of Conservative politicians are fair game, and wives and children have been the victims of the most malicious stories, spun (LIED) in the worst light possible, and trumpeted all over the news reports and headlines for weeks.
Demwits? They will scream bloody murder in hysterical outrage if someone says Malia has a pimple.
You think that Ronald Reagan’s divorce wasn’t covered in a partisan way in the media at the time and afterward to this day? [shakes head] Sheesh!
Wake up and smell the coffee about just what we are dealing with here. “Double standard” is a gross understatement.
Well, I’m reminded of two things my folks used to tell me: Two wrongs don’t make a right, and never try to win an argument with an idiot; he’ll drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
BTTT
Well stated.
I am not suggesting that we do wrong. Our reaction tactics should be more like theirs, though.
There is nothing wrong with making a reasonable, outraged fuss when our people’s families are attacked in this manner instead of running with our tails between our legs because someone on MSNBC might call us doody heads.
It is our disadvantage that we must stay above board while the enemy, and I mean The Enemy, lies, cheats, votes after they’re dead, kills people, and steals elections with seeming impunity.
We must be smarter than they are. Fortunately, that is not difficult.
BTTT.
