ANYBODY'S COMPUTER EVER...
given you this message before, without warning:
"shutting down to install updates 1 of 3"
AND no option to opt out or postpone or to save what you are currently working on? Mine recently did that. I think we've all seen those funny vids of really angry people smashing their computer in their cubicle. I have never done that but when a stupid piece of * vista machine did this to me, I was VERY close to smashing it to pieces.
(snicker)
It’s the government, gleaning information from your machine.
If you have automatic updates enabled, this will happen. Also, if you have Windows Update set to download and prompt you when it’s ready to install the update packages, and you accidentally clicked on a confirmation that you wanted to install.
Luckily I didn't need to save any material in the programs I was using at the time.
This is just wrong.
Are you telling me MS is not smart enough to give you the option to postpone or save your work before restarting your computer against your will? I was not given the option. There was no “OK” button to click on. It just did it.
I’ve seen computers do this hundreds of times but always there was a warning or an opt out offered, and “click ok to procede”. This time there was nothing.
do you run vista? I do, and it goes through this routine on occasion.
Mine gives the option. It comes up with a box and says “X minutes until restart”
It happened to me this morning.
Watch out dude, it’s Homeland Security installing TrackWare on your computer!
j/k (I hope)
The option is to turn of automatic and scheduled updates, you can have it notify you of new updates, or just check it periodically.
There are also some driveby installers of malware/spyware/virus that mimic MS updates, so you should check for those ASAP, and if found, find the door they came in on and nail it closed.
It asked.. you just missed it. a small popup in the lower right of your screen near the clock comes up and says “I’m going to shut down to install updates” (or something along those lines) then it offers you two options “ok” or “postpone” I think that message is displayed for a bit then it starts it’s updates.
Turn off automatic updates and it won’t do it any more. You can still select that the machine tell you there are updates needed (with out downloading them or installing them automatically)

Yup, usually I have 15 minutes or so but when I am really into doing something I don’t notice the pop up warning screen. This happens when I use adobe and it is in full screen mode. Microsoft site has instructions for customizing, like doing all updates yourself. That is how my son has his set cause he’s a gamer. Updating slows it down. While he is off fighting a war, I update his computer when mine updates.

have updates install automatically.
Or upgrade to Windows 7. I think it will wait until you shut down the computer to install the updates.
Avoid vista like the plague.
Windows 7 does the same thing. A message will pop up to ask you if you want to reboot now or postpone and you can postpone 10 minutes, 1 hour or 4 hours. I usually choose 4 hours because I will probably shut down before then anyway.
My computer did something like that. I have a virus called Microsoft Vista.
