Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes said on Sunday he would not have made the latest James Bond film "Skyfall" without Daniel Craig playing the MI6 agent because of the complexity the British actor has brought to the character.
Mendes, who won an Academy Award for directing "American Beauty" in 1999, has depicted troubled men with ordinary lives -a far cry from 007, the ultimate action hero.

“Complexity” is code for “gay.”
Sorry, but as an actor, Daniel Craig is about as complex as a cinderblock.
I’m trying to fathom why Sam Mendes was chosen to direct. That “American Beauty” was one of the most ludicrous, overblown and heterophobic farces in film history.
Not to mention completely wrong for the role.
The original is still the best. Sean Connery.
I’ll take ANY of the other Bonds over Craig and that includes Moore!
Also most irritating is the herky jerky first person film style.
Moore over Craig?
Boy, you do HATE Craig.
Can't say I agree with that. But Craig's Bond is a little too dark. I realize that Bond is a spy, but Bond has always been fun.
The theory is that Sam was good at bringing novel based themes to the big screen. Of course this assumes that Babs has even read a Bond novel.
The ministry of defence per the You Only Live Twice chapter Obit and the short story The Property of A Lady.
Despite many misgivings (and my own), Daniel Craig has done a phenomenal job.
And he landed a real babe like Rachel Weiss, so he’s good to go in my book.
I agree about AB.
The film completely sucked and was full of the expected leftist bullshit.
“And then the Nazi-loving Marine turns out to be a fag. The end.”
I was disgusted with the whole thing.
The focus should be on the fact that he is a killer who enjoys doing what he does because he is on the right side.
I think Craig can bring that out, (depending on the writing) as did Connerly in the first two Bond movies.
IHMO, Timothy Dalton did a great “dark” Bond and was taken to task for it. Personally, Bond became an Airplane-like spoof movie under Moore.
Craig’s doing a FANTASTIC job.
I thought the MOD bit was Bond’s official cover, but not his true service (acknowleging his previous RN service)?
Daniel Craig and Ralph Fiennes in the same movie. My head will explode.
Maybe you should audition to be a Bond girl in the next 007 movie.
Wow! So many haters for the new Bond and Daniel Craig. Complexity? Yes. I’ve loved all of the Bond films from the past to current, and I’ll say that Craig has done a wonderful job as James Bond. He has brought a deeper understanding of who Bond is in his earlier days and will now get a chance to become a bit more funny.
Sure, the first movie was a bit serious and the second was a bit dark, but that was the story. Both films were well written and helped to explain the full character arc of who Bond is and what made him into the agent we all know and love.
Sure, that’s all my opinion and I have more thoughts on it. I enjoyed the first two movies and am sure will love the third.
