Tri said he was ready to give up his post if Phuket were to really disappear from the world by April 28.

(evidently, some quake predictions running amok?)

I wouldn't have worried until this statement: "Please have confidence in the authorities. Rumours are just rumours. Aftershocks will continue for seven more days but they won't cause any big shaking," Tri said.

Actually its pronounced pooKit...

The 2005 Tsunami killed alot of folks there so I suppose they are still spooked. I took the family there last August the beaches and family resorts are really quite nice

Understood thanks, and that’s how I see it also.

Phuket is located right in the section of Thai coast impacted horribly by the Tsunami.

I’m not making Thai jokes. I admire the Thais a lot.

Our own Libertarians, should be more like Thais, IMHO. Very free people, in many regards. They’ve got that almost impossible system: in effect a benevolent dictatorship. It’s actually a Kingdom, and the King is in fact quite powerful - yet the system keeps hands off their citizens for the most part. Very unique.

I just noticed the article linked on Stan Deyo’s site, and having just had a small quake here yesterday thought it might be worth posting.

(just to clarify, I am not supporting a benevolent dictatorship here or anywhere else)

I believe there is some inherent quality about Thais themselves, which allows their society to function with such freedom.

No “benevolent” dictator anywhere else, would remain benevolent.

Thais simply have such a profound anchor religiously in non-vilence, as to make it work there.

Their style of governmental system, were it exported to a country such as America would run out of control and be taken over by a true dictator, within months. Our national psyche simply does not operate anywhere near benignly enough, to remain peaceful unconstrained by our Constitution.

Just to clarify. :D

Seems to work there though. Darn well in my opinion.

A good people, and country.

How was the cost of living, food and everyday stuff? is this a possible retirement place for the future?

I think a place like Chaing Ma is a better choice for retirement in Thailand. It in the north of the country and there are about 30,000 retirees living there so it would be easier to get acclimated and the cost of living is low but not as low as the Philippines or Malaysia.
Phuket is a island and is fairly expensive by Thai standards, there is a large red light district in Phuket Town which is about 20km from the beach resorts so that attracts alot of foreigners which keep the prices on the island relatively high.

I like the Thais as well. Thailand like many third world countries offers much more personal freedom than most industrialized countries, as long as you don’t say anything negative about the royal family... They put down any resistance to the government very quickly we were in Bangkok for the Thai New Year in 2008 and they had troops in APC’s firing on civilians in front of our hotel but by the next morning the streets were clean and the bodies were gone..

“PHUKET: — Phuket Governor Tri Akaradecha on Friday ordered that a complaint be filed with police against persons spreading rumours that doomsday will arrive in Phuket by April 28.”

I think that recent 8.6 quake off the coast of Sumatra might have started the rumors. I’m looking forward to the 28th!

As you probably know its a dispute between the current prime minister's supporters the “Yellow shirts” and the former prime minister's supporters the “Red shirts.” It seems to be a local thing with little if any foreign involvement. Also the recent floods seem to have put a damper on the protests..
