MIT's Technology Review has just gotten news of a mysterious new project that claims it will "create a new industry and a new definition of 'natural resources.'" Space exploration company Planetary Resources will be unveiled in a conference call on Tuesday, April 24th. Besides the audacious announcement, which promises to "overlay two critical sectors — space exploration and natural resources — to add trillions of dollars to the global GDP," what makes this unique is its high-profile support group. The venture is backed by Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, director James Cameron, and politician Ross Perot's son, among others.

Dude know more about asteroids than anybody, and he’s been dead fifty years.

Look for Obama to sign an Executive Order putting all space mining under Federal control.

It's really difficult to control very remote colonies of can-do people. Ask the late King George III. ;)

... and for the EPA to rule that space mining causes hailstorms.

I’m sure the UN will want to butt in. To Which the company should reply: feel free. Our offices are on the Moon, and you’ll have to deliver your diktats in person. AND back them up...

Could Space Czar/liaison with the private sector be a position for Newt in a Romney administration? At first glance, I like it.

The moon is high ground. And regolith is as good as plutonium when you drop it from high enough.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Someone should write a book. ;)

"everything we hold of value on this planet — metal and minerals and real estate and energy" are available in "infinite quantities."

The whole reason these things are valuable is that they are scarce.

If you managed to bring a $20T nickel-iron asteroid into earth orbit and mine it, the primary result, besides causing a lot of earthside nickel and iron miners to lose their jobs, would be a catastrophic drop in the price of nickel and iron.

“Trillions of dollars to the global GDP”

Prolly means about $.10 for every man woman and child after Cameron and his globalist investor buddies enjoy their take

enjoy your wealth

(oh, and don’t forget you owe $.03 in global tax on your share)

ruin the thread by bringing up the next biggest fraud after Obama. That would be Mitt.

If somehow the evil Mitt wins the nomination, I hope he and the rest of the GOP-e gets slaughtered politically.

Mitt and his staff are nothing but a bunch of power-lusting frauds.

P.S. ALL Conservatives should keep hoping that a miracle happens and the fraudulent Statist Mitt doesn't win the nomination.

Is that a sci-fi book, or sort of a how-to?

Something I got from a sci-fi audiobook: BFRs.

It stands for rocks that are big. You do the math.

To be replaced with the Space Division of the EPA.

Let’s not omit OSHA in Space for some real regulations ... can’t have people flying all over space without adequate safety equipment like regulation backup ships attached to each one as well as NASA approved gauges, parts, and so forth - oh and an approved GPS unit as well as a flare kit both approved by the Coast Guard.

A how to but he explains the physics behind a lot of sci-fi and how it really isn’t that far fetched.

I hope that this truly is an enterprising commercial space effort to mine the heavens, but knowing the political nature of the players involved, I am fearful that it is just some green scam. Please prove me wrong guys.
