Chicago - Everyone expected the "Hunger Games" would rule the box office.
But one unexpected side effect of the hit movie and book series is that archery is now hotter than ever.
Archery clubs and ranges across the country are seeing a huge boost in interest right now.

Please note I'm not criticizing you for posting this, just marveling at the herd...
The surge in interest in archery is only a surprise to the media. A blind squirrel could have predicted this from the popularity of the books alone.
The biggest driver of gun sales is movies. Given that guns appear in most action movies, the subject is too ubiquitous to cause an interest (like with archery), but the tools used do spawn great interest by customers. Something new & notable hits the big screen, and suddenly sales for that product spike. Had she used a bolt-action instead of a longbow, we’d see similar results.
Considering the much-debated “It’s leftist! No, it’s rightist!” controversy over the movie, glad to see self-sufficiency self-armament is being inspired.
I been a bow hunter since I was 12... I love it when these young pups pull out a modern fancy bow, and I pull out my 25 year old browning (with an eradicator sight) they laugh at me, until I outshoot them.... :)
Archery is good for Zombies too!
Anyone reading and understanding the books would be purchasing automatic rifles and barrels of ammunition, not bows and arrows.
The surge in interest in archery is only surpassed by the interest in a pretty girl into archery. If the role called for a Rambo type of male character, would this same story be written? Or would it be just another good action flick?

Well yes of course, because you would want to prevent the USA from turning into “Agenda 21 porn realized” in the first place.
Of course after the “Hunger Games Scenario” is “realized” I am sure the government has already taken away the citizen’s rights to have and use guns. So it is nice to have archery skills as a backup, but archery skills are much more useless against tanks etc.. than having a high powered rifle.
It is a LOT harder to vote from the rooftops when the situation requires it using a bow and arrow than it is using a high powered rifle with a decent scope. Plus making a arrow go through Blue Helmets is a LOT harder than a decent rifle round.

Probably quite a bit of truth in that observation, but a lot of the new interest seems to be from teenage girls. That is likely their first introduction into any type of weapon and martial skill.
What's not to like?
Having a bow, and knowing how to use it, could be an advantage in many scenarios (note I'm talking about having a bow in addition to, rather than instead of, a firearm):
1) Bows are quieter than guns.
2) Bows do not produce muzzle flash at night.
3) Arrows can be recovered later and re-used.
Good points...anyone who has read the books (I just finished #2, and my daughter is about 1/4 of the way through that one) knows that Katniss always tries to retrieve her arrows and kind of gets mad when she can’t recover tham.
Our son, who is a first-year Webelo is Cub Scouts, went on a camping trip over the weekend with other packs in the area. His two favorite activities over the weekend were the fishing and archery. He now wants to learn more about both ;)

True, although I fired a suppressed MP5 last week that was very quiet. Interestingly, more so than the suppressed Ruger 22/45.
News "items" don't have to be genuine, they just have to be "interesting". Lazy editors have run disproven urban legends as "fact" for decades.
