It's classic movie exploitation. Pressbooks of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s used to include the suggested text of such "fad" news items to promote a given movie.

News "items" don't have to be genuine, they just have to be "interesting". Lazy editors have run disproven urban legends as "fact" for decades.
