I can tell that Freerepublic has started spiraling into hysteria similar to what I sensed around the 2008 election time.... I'll check back in in 2013 to see if things simmered down.

For years and years and years I've mentioned from time to time my own personal SS experience ~ AS THEIR DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR in an apartment building overlooking the Iwo Jima memorial.
They had parties ~ I was always invited BECAUSE, as it turned out, I lived downstairs.
I always got the feeling folks didn't really believe that ~ yet there they are in Columbia having a regular PAR TAY just like they used to have.
Met John Dean's wife at one of them! That tale G. Gordon told about what he thought they were sent to get at Watergate? Sounds reasonable to me.
BTW, all the gals at those parties wore that "I'm not really a waitress" lipstick.

In the olden days, an opus would invite congratulations, like those customarily extended to freed slaves, or prisoners who have completed their debt to the society, not to mention to new Ph.D graduates in social justice sciences. More, as you must surely remember, there were flowers, kisses and offers of financial assistance to the opus authors. And now? Jeers , insults and complaints about the substandard quality of the opus. The place has gone to hell, indeed.

In diplomacy, war and politics friends of convenience are the norm. The US turned Stalin, a man who exceeded Hitler's body count, into Uncle Joe the ally in order to defeat Germany and Japan. During the Cold War we allied with all manner of dictators and undesirables to undermine the Soviet Union which became the great enemy. In order to keep Iran destabilized we overtly and then covertly support Saddam Hussein. The list goes on and on. Put simply, we ally with evil all the time for the greater good and I am not against having done any of that. I think the same applies very often in politics.

The odds that I will ever need to Opus is quite miniscule but I will take spelling and grammar into account. I’ll make sure to use Word and spellcheck and all that. Maybe I will find a proofreader.

I think it’s a good analogy, but here’s a better one.
A buddy invites you over to his house to watch the game. Sit on his couch, watch his TV, enjoy his air conditioning, drink his beer and eat his pretzels...while his favorite team is playing.
Most of us would be savvy enough to cheer for his team, or at least not to insult them, right? And after you are invited over time and again, wouldn’t you at least bring a 12-pack or a bag of chips?

What have we done to deserve this sorry excuse for an opus? If you’re going to go away for good, do it with style. Write up a Jim Dandy with big words and lots of rhetoric,baseless complaints, outrageous lies and foretelling of doom upon your departure. Here you’ve done wrote a sissy-dog of a letter which kindergarteners would laugh at. Years ago some guy flamed out here big time . . somebody help me out here. FatBoySlim? or something like that. He wrote one for the ages. Of course he was deservedly booted. But next time just slink away quietly in the night instead of something like this.

I don’t understand it. If you don’t like what’s going on simply avoid being here. With 212 posts they certainly weren’t chatty so why the ego trip vanity? Makes no sense.
