Chris Christie: America Becoming "A Bunch of People Sitting on a Couch Waiting ....

Conservatives love brash New Jersey Governor Chris Christie because he always speaks his mind, and his remarks at a forum on the economy (hosted by George W. Bush) were no different. Christie talked about the nation's bleak outlook, thanks to out-of-control entitlement spending -- and as usual, he didn't mince words.

Christie spent most of his 30-minute speech on New Jersey budget issues, but brought up national policy toward the end. He said it is the least optimistic period he’s ever seen for the nation.

"It’s because government’s now telling them, stop dreaming, stop striving, we’ll take care of you. We’re turning into a paternalistic entitlement society. That will not just bankrupt us financially, it will bankrupt us morally," Christie told Bush, Henry Kissinger and an assortment of Republican governors in a theater at the New York Historical Society.

"When the American people no longer believe that this is a place where only their willingness to work hard and to act with honor and integrity and ingenuity determines their success in life, then we’ll have a bunch of people sitting on a couch waiting for their next government check," Christie said.

I love that he brought up the moral implications of the entitlement attitude, as that's the heart of our country. We were founded upon high ideals, such as individuality, personal responsibility, and a desire to strive for greatness, but we're starting to forget those traits in favor of a government-provided safety blanket.

Is it too much to hope that Romney might pick him to be his running mate?

Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon
Listening to the candidates debate.
Laugh about it, shout about it
When you’ve got to choose -
Either way you look at it, you lose...

And Benjamin Franklin said, “you have a republic madam, if you can keep it”.

Christie’s State propably has more free-loaders than any other state.

The question is what is HE DOING TO GET THESE FREE-LOADERS
off his own state rolls?

Not much!

Here I am stuck in the middle

And Benjamin Franklin said, “you have a republic madam, if you can keep it”.

You have that almost right, and please forgive me if I've got this wrong, but my recollection is that the wife of the mayor of Philadelphia rushed up to Dr. Franklin immediately after the Constitutional Convention was over and asked, "What have you given us, Dr. Franklin?" to which he replied, "A republic, Madam, if you can keep it."

Oh, I should add that he said “you” instead of “we” is because Franklin at that point was over 80 years old and did not expect to live long enough to help defend the founding of the new nation.

My family was on welfare so I can speak from experience. It is a debilitating, humiliating thing that turns you into a a slug. It robs people of their dignity and there ability to hope. We got off as soon as possible but it damages the soul. Best to make poor people work—then at least they would have some pride in what they do. Yes, they would gripe but they would develop a sense of self worth and human value. No wonder people in this role seek numbness in drugs and booze!

The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history, has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:

From bondage to spiritual faith;

From spiritual faith to great courage;

From courage to liberty;

From liberty to abundance;

From abundance to complacency;

From complacency to apathy;

From apathy to dependence;

From dependency back into bondage.”

I would say we are SOLIDLY moving on to DEPENDENCY and racing back into BONDAGE.

Christie is dead right but I don’t see a way out. This is just the life cycle of Democracies. We are not going back to liberty any time soon. This cycle only goes one direction, and we are racing toward bondage. I bet those dependent run at least 1 in 3 people in the USA.
